Update. Figured out how to fix after checking another work station, updated Premiere Pro there and noticed the playhead was moving.

After a reinstall did not work on the main, I basically decided to 'cleared the media cache files' and 'reset the workspace layout' (after watching a video) under Windows menu heading, and now the playhead works and displays as normal. So its still a bug, but a reasonably fixable bug.

I ran into this issue as well, it is still a bug. I cleared the cache, which did nothing. And after doing things like reseting my workspace, restarting the software, and rebooting my computer, I eventually discovered that the cause was the Essential Graphics window. When I clicked away from it and went to the Effects window, this issue stopped, and did not come back when I pulled the Essential Graphics window back up.

I just..... I can't. It feels like half of my job as a video editor these days is just fighting the Adobe software and troubleshooting problems with it.

After trying every available fix I could find online without success, I discovered a few workarounds that finally resolved the issue. First, switching the NVIDIA drivers between "Game Ready" and "Studio" drivers (and vice versa) while editing made a significant difference and allowed the process to work smoothly.

The second solution involved using my laptop unplugged from the charger, as this seemed to alleviate the problem.

Lastly, opening other tabs or panels (aside from the Effects Control tab) helped reduce stuttering, although some minor issues persisted. While not perfect, these steps improved performance considerably compared to before.

I have Adobe Premiere 25.1.0
I managed to fix the error:
1) I downloaded REVO Uninstaller and removed Adobe Premiere along with the registry entries,
2) I removed the graphics card drivers (NVidia) in Windows11 fallback mode using Display Driver Uninstaller
3) I reinstalled the latest graphics card drivers from the NVidia website
4) I reinstalled Premiere PRO
and... works

  • Latest NVIDA Studio Driver: doesn't help
  • Clear media cache: doesn't help (not sure if done correctly)
  • No more essential graphics in v25
  • Undock program: doesn't help (used to work)
  • Disable audio input: doesn't help
  • Disable "GPU accelerated UI rendering (restart required)": some UI elemnents flicker like mad, but at least playhead moves.

I didn't see anything about your hardware.

I just tried unchecking (and restarting) GPU accelerated. I did have flickering in 25.1 release version, and less flickering in Beta. 25.2.0 b52

The easiest way is (if you have a windows and nvidia computer) to update your gpu driver to NVidia Studio in Geforce Experience or in the new Nvidia app. It solved all my big Premiere pro problems.

Have the same bug. Can't find a fix that works.  Any updates?

I'm working in Premiere 25.0.0 and I've tried everything I've seen in this thread and my playhead still doesn't move when I press the right or left arrow keys. I don't even know how to open the Essential Graphics panel to begin with. I cleared all the media cache.

When I press the left or right key, the playhead will move a tiny bit but then not any more despite press the keys more. The blue numbers in the top left corner of the timeline panel go up or down as I press right or left... but the playhead doesn't move.

I don't know how the heck else to fix this. Anyone have any ideas? 🙂

My playhead moves fine (with arrow keys) on one project, but not on another.

+1 still an issue. Caused by Essential Graphics Panel "Browse" tab being open. Windows

Indeed, in version 24.5 the playhead is not moving if the Essential Graphics panel is open. This is an rather annoying bug. When is Adobe issuing a new update that solves this bug? Today or tomorrow?

Amazed this was first reported in June and its now September and no fix! I have the same issue whats weird on my issue is i have 2 custom work sapces one for dual monitor one for single monitor.

The single monitor workspace has essential graphics open and play head works fine

The dual monitor work space has essential graphics open on the second monitor and the play head sticks during play back but as per everyone else if i close the essential graphics panel the play head works fine. WTF is that all about?

I dont want to keep closing esential graphics what the point in that.

I am having the same issue i tried everything suggested on this page and got nothing, not even closing the Essential graphics panel, I can scrub through the footage in both the preview and main viewer but it doesn't play on it's own, the audio pays just not the video

@Colossus848 I thought in this thread the video does play, it's just the playhead doesn't move while that's happening. "it doesn't play on it's own, the audio pays just not the video", that sounds like a differerent problem?

Mine doesn't play and I haven't found a thread that actually deals with it
