PNG file I'm importing into premier pro with transparent background is not showing

I downloaded a file from Adobe into Adobe Illustrator.  Then I exported it as a PNG file so I could add it to my video on Premiere Pro.  The file I'm opening has a transparent background and it still shows up as checkered in Premiere Pro.  I've tried for hours to remove it and can't seem to find an answer.  I think it may have to do with the alpha channel, but not sure what to tell the software program to treat it like a transparent file.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!
