Premiere 15.2 through 15.4 unusable with large projects on Mac Pro (2019) Big Sur

After having no issues with 15.2 on small projects, Premiere became completely unusable after about a month of working on a feature film. It really seemed like an access error, as I'd get errors like "Unable to access resource 'S_ErrorXl_N_D@2x' (type svg)," "Error Retrieving frame XXXX at time XX," and "Unable to access resource 'CursorDataID-19 (type xml)." The errors came with frozen or black video, I could still hear audio, and it usually fixed itself after about 10-20 seconds. I also couldn't export anything no matter which renderer I used. I thought it had something to do with Canon MXFs, since those have always been problematic for Premiere, but I got the same errors on ProRes 422, HQ and 4444 clips as well. The issues happened about once a day at first, and gradually increased to once every minute. At that point we shut down editorial until we figured this out.

This is a very specific issue, because openning the same projects (part of a large Premiere Production) with the same media storage on iMacs or iMac Pros on Big Sur or Catalina worked just fine. This made me think it was a hardware issue with my system. I have a Mac Pro (2019): 16-core on Big Sur 11.4 (I had to upgrade because PrPro 15.2 caused regular kernel failure with Catalina, and upgrading to Big Sur fixed those issues), 128 GB ram, Radeon Pro Vega II 32 GB graphics. We troubleshot everything from uninstalling every bit of software and drivers I could think of, including all Adobe apps, physically uninstalling my second GPU, switching media storage from a Raid to a single spinning disk (still external), and nothing made any difference. The last step of troubleshooting I tried was to downgrade Premiere to 15.1, and suddenly everything worked great (except for rendering with GPU acceleration, but switching to Software Only gets the job done).

In conclusion, something was introduced in 15.2 that causes read errors on large projects on a Mac Pro, and the issue persists with 15.4, but goes away when downgrading to 15.1. Thank you, Adobe, for allowing me to open projects in previous dot-versions, otherwise I would be in a very tight spot right now.

Also experiencing a similar issue with similar error messages, in a small project PrPro 2022.
2019 Mac Pro. Issue with FS7 and FX9 .MXF footage. Issue appears with Metal and Software Only rendering. Have imported into new projects, cleared caches, uninstalled/reinstalled, changed media drives, removed plugins. Error appears very often but not predictably at a certain clip or timecode. Moved project to 2013 Mac Pro for a day and project was stable.

Hey Adobe engineers - I made a video about this problem and it still exists in the latest version in 2022. Please fix it.

Issue still not fixed in the latest version. We've been dealing with this for six months now, customer support tells me this is a known issue, and still no solution.

I can understand that the Mac Pro userbase is relatively small but please Adobe, fix this or I (and a lot of users with me) will have no choice but to change our workflows to a new NLE.

Having the same problem with a similar setup Mac Pro (2019) Big Sur. Scared to update anything including the OS until this is solved. Sitting on ver 15.0 for now. 15.1 caused audio issues with Varicam Audio. Very frustrating. MXF footage from Varicam / Cannon seem to do it the most, but even a simple .mp4 can cause this.

I have not moved from 15.1 as I am in the middle of a big project, and lost so much time trying to figure out how to make it work.My biggest issue was how my entire system would freeze, leading to hard boot. This happened a number of times.

Yes, this is still happening in 22.0 and the latest v.22.1.2
Today I'm having issues with Sony .mxf files specs attached.

I've just been in contact with an Adobe service rep who assured me this is a known problem that should be resolved in the next update of Premiere pro. Fingers crossed...

UPDATE: This issue is still present with Premiere 22.0.0. I will be forced to switch my entire team to Avid or Resolve if this is not addressed. It has become completely unusable for professionals.

Exactly the same issues on my end. I cannot comprehend why this issue has not been solved yet. We are talking about pro machines with pro specs, same issues on the recent 2022 update.

Issues mostly start after a couple of minutes, and are most prevalent in projects with mixed media. .MXF, .RED, prores, etc.

Please, please fix this as soon as possible.

Adobe: Please let the pro editors know when the dang software will work with 4K MXF files again. I'm on 14.9 until I KNOW this is fixed. So frustrating. I did switch to FCP for a project and am considering making a permanent move. Good grief! Don't you guys test the software updates before release?
