Premiere 2023 and 2024 Unusable Mac Pro 2019 Ventura 13.6.4

Question

So, I have a feature film I cut in Premiere using all ProRes 4444 files. I haven't looked at it for a few months in Premiere, because we moved on to color grade, sound, etc. Now the director and I, who own the production company, wanted another editor to take a look at it and do a fine cut. I made a copy of all files and went to check if everything is working and now Premiere doesn't work.

I tried a few months ago to update to Premiere 2024 and it's performance was terrible at best, so I rolled back to 2023 and It worked fine. I did update the machine to Ventura 13.6.4, which is the only thing I changed. Right now 03/13/2024, I get the spinning beachball if I try to play the project, or if I click anything. I would expect it to perhaps be a bit slower playing of the new RAID where the project also resides, but the original project also exhibits the same behavior using the original Premiere project file which is on a PCI NVME drive - the video assets are on a RAID 0, both drives read faster than needed in all ways.

I updated to Premiere v23.6.4 and v24.2.1 and neither of them work. My machine is a 2019 Mac Pro with 128gigs RAM, NVME PCI work drives, Pro Res card and 2 Radeon Pro Vega 2 Duo cards - litterally one of the most powerful Macs ever. M chip may have faster core speeds, but this machine has 4x the GPU compute. Running Premiere does't even use 1/20th of any system reources.

Does anyone know what is going on? Or perhaps have the same machine and know what version works with Ventura 13.6.4 on Intel Mac Pro?

My goodness seriously! Premiere used to be the most rock solid program that was incredibly reliable and fast - what happened? The color is so far off that I just stopped round tripping from DaVinci Resolve all together. Now the frikin program doesn't even work? I know that Apple screws with every software developer by changing everything all the time, but please tell me how this is a "Pro" app.

How to properly update your project to new version of Premiere, say from 2023 (or earlier) to 2024.

If anyone sees this, I just answered my own question. For a Mac Pro 2019 running Ventura 13.6.4, Premiere Pro V24.2.1 seems to work well, but you cannot just open your project in the new version of Premiere or it will lag like crazy. I don't know about the color shift export stuff yet, but here is what you do to upgrade/update project from previous Premiere Pro version like 2023:

1 Backup your existing project (you should already have this on another drive)

2 Make a new project in Premiere Pro v24.2.1 (click inside one of your project windows if you don't see the menu bar)

3 Import Project - File > Import > Choose file > Import

4 Check > Import the entire project (unless you only need certain timelines)

5 Click OK

I think the laggy project, beachballs and terrible performance is some kind of bug that happens when you just try to open the project in a new version of Premiere Pro. This worked for me and I hope it helps you. It will probably work accross diferent Macs as well as PCs. Prehaps it properly updates your project?
