Question

Premiere crashed my entire system?

Hello Adobe Community,

This is my first time posting (anything, anywhere!) but I've read this forum for years and hope someone out there can help. I'm working on a 7-channel synchronized video project that will exhibited this fall. I'm not sure whether it is "big" or not (the file size is 5MB). I have a couple of hundred clips and am working primarily in HD with a few assets shot in 4K. That said, I have a mix footage from a Canon 5D Mark II/III, GH4, my iPhone6S and a GoPro4. I'm not using heavy effects; mostly masks, color correction, blend modes. Sound is being produced separately. My workflow is to injest everything as a fairly crunched down H.264 proxy. It's not practical to break this up into smaller working files because the imagery rotates and I have to have access to all 7 channels...

Here's my horror show: I've been working for months without incident in 2017, version 11.0.1. Last Monday, my screen went black. The only thing I had running was PrPro. It was impossible to reboot; I tried everything I could think of to troubleshoot and my system report said that my HD was fine. In the end, a Mac 'Genius' re-installed my OS. And I re-installed the updated Adobe suite (2017, 11.0.2). After that there was nothing I could do to get my project to open (I tried opening a fresh project and importing my 11.0.1 project in). So I re-installed the 11.0.1 version. All was well until tonight. I was working with time remapping and PP quit. When I re-opened the project, PP crashed. I tried an auto-save version and it still crashed. Again and again. I tried to open a new project; and it crashed. T

I went back a couple of auto-saves and opened the project on my laptop and it seemed fine...

My main question is whether the source of my system meltdown could have been caused by Premiere Pro? It seems crazy, but I've never experienced this kind of instability with either my Mac (seriously, I think I've probably experienced a crash like that maybe 3 times in 25 years) or Adobe. Glitches, yes, but not this kind of total freakout. Both my laptop and desktop are on OS 10.12.4

My desktop is a MacPro, 2.7GHz, 12 core, 64GB. Graphics card is AMD FirePro D700. I keep my project assets and cache on a G-Raid Studio.

Any ideas about what could be going on?

Thanks so much for the feedback. You all are great. The Monahan article was really helpful; and I'm working through the Troubleshooting tips on Premiere Wikia.

I should have posted this before; but for what it's worth, Premiere gave me this pop-up with each crash last night:

Premiere Pro has encountered an error.

    [/Tanq/releases/2016/shared/adobe/MediaCore/MediaFoundation/Src/TimeTransform.cpp.114]

The Time Transform at the end is a clue because I was messing with ping-ponging a clip in time re-mapping when premiere flipped out.

I've read that people suggest NOT using GPU Acceleration (open CL). Could that be part of my problem?

I'm sorry to be confusing here; but I keep going back and forth between whether its a computer thing or a software thing. My computer is beefy and I can't imaging why something like time remapping would do such damage. And after the FATAL crash of last week, the Apple guy did a complete restore...wouldn't that have reset anything that was corrupt?

"Have you tried running a graphic demanding game, or some other sort of stress test on the system to see if it can be repeated?"

I don't have anything more taxing than my graphics programs (no time for gaming ;-) But I wonder if running a memory test is the next thing to try?

In the meantime; I removed and reloaded PrPro, removed all cache info and let the project rebuild.  It seems like a Hail Mary, but I did get my project to open. I'm saving a renamed version of every hour or so. How does one figure out if there is a corrupt file/clip in the project? I have about 650 clips (325, but each also points to a proxy).

I'm new to forums, so please advise if I should be posting to a different thread with these follow on questions.

I have exactly the same issue. Do you have any news about this? I couldn't find anything that work.

    Thank you.

Most modern operating systems are designed to protect the integrity of the system from errant applications. There's always a chance that application misbehavior can inadvertently uncover a vulnerability in this protection model but it's highly unlikely. It's more likely that Premiere is just doing things that exercise your system to the point of revealing a latent issue with your system.

Yeah, I mean... It could be Premiere. But we have it running on about 20 machines (2017.0.2) at my work and it hasn't caused anything close to that. Based on my experience it sounds like you're having some serious hardware issue as John mentioned above. Probably overheating in the cpu or gpu, or hard drive/ram failures. Unless something was changed in system preferences at a deep level, this couldn't be caused by software to my knowledge.

Have you tried running a graphic demanding game, or some other sort of stress test on the system to see if it can be repeated? Or download a system monitor app and load premiere (if you can?) or something similar and see if the settings go into the danger zone.
