Premiere crashes when importing video clip

My Premiere seems to have been working okay until today. I tried importing a video clip and the system simply battles. I can hear the hard drive working overtime to try and import the clip into program (i.e. not onto the timeline). It won't work. The video file itself plays fine. There doesn't seem to be any problem with it. The MP4 is just under 4GB. Premiere just freezes with this "not responding" error, and then just crashes off the screen. I don't know what to do except to use another video editing program for this clip. Can anyone help me please? Thanks!

what are the settings for the clip?  codec, frame rate, pixel dimensions?

Thank you Ann. After replaying the files on another computer, I see that there seems to be a fault in the file after all - hence Premiere's issue with it - even though it had played fine by itself. I have finally got the file up and working again - but with another problem which I am going to put a support question for. Thanks again.
