Premiere Crashing my Entire Mac Every Time I Start a Project

Every time I start a project in premiere, as I am going through footage in the assembly, the screen starts turning black just in spaces where I move my cursor. When I go to shut down premiere (or my computer) the menu dropdowns appear blank. Closing premiere does not fix this. I have to hard-shut-down my computer every time. Please help!
