Question

Premiere Importing Minutes of Footage as Seconds.

Relatively new to premiere, been importing footage from my capture card with little to no trouble. While I can view the full length of the video in windows media, for some reason premiere keeps importing only the beginning seconds of my footage. This doesn't apply to all footage, but coincidentally it does to the footage I want to use. Is there a work around for this? I would appreciate the guidance.

Hey thecuzjim!

Firstly, I would recommend transferring your footage from the memory card to a hard drive -- either an external drive or the one in your computer.

Secondly, is there a chance that you have an "in" and an "out" marked on the footage? It would have this semi-transparent bar on top of it, which I've circled in green. If the in and the out are marked, then when you go to import the footage, it will only import the section selected.

Hi Caroline, thank you for getting back to me.

I do have an external hard drive that I transfer the video footage to before importing it into the media browser, and I recognize the "in" and "out" markers and how they work, but unfortunately they are not the issue.

There are 2 main problems I have experienced when importing the footage, which is usually between 5 and 10 minutes in length.

1.) Premiere seems to be unable to import the specific mp4 file from my external hard drive, which results in Premiere crashing.

2.) If by some chance the file is imported into Premiere, it is shown in the media browser as 5 seconds of footage.

I have tried a few workarounds, such as setting up proxies (I'm editing on a laptop), and trying to compress the file through external means for hopefully smoother importing, but none have worked so far. Again, when this happens and to what video files is not consistent, aside from conveniently applying to the specific shot I want.To test, I just imported 15 minutes of video with no hiccups at all.
