Question

Premiere Pro 13.1.2 crashes after importing videos.

Hello everyone,

I have a problem that only occurred on the latest versions as of today of Premiere Pro and After Effects, where the software has a very difficult time running imported videos.

The issue, in a nutshell, is when importing videos (no matter how big, small, long, or short they are), it imports them just fine but in Premiere, but takes forever to generate peak files for some of them, and gets stuck on "media is pending". At this stage, whatever I try to do, the software will just simply crash.

I am on an up-to-date very capable machine, and I have all of Adobe's software updated to the latest versions.

(Note that I keep my cache files pretty clean as I clean the unused ones regularly)

One thing I will mention is I tried to uninstall this version and install an older one instead. Apparently, the lower version crashed immediately and worked miserably that I had to install the latest one again. This made me suspect that the problem is from my machine, I hope it's not but I also don't have any issues with any other software.

I hope I can find a solution to this.

Have a good day.

Might want to update to 13.1.3 released today.

Hi Ann,

The issue was resolved after I reset my operating system, I was waiting for an update though but it came one day late.

It could have possibly resolved it.

I appreciate your help, thank you.

Hi hessaqayed,

Sorry to hear that you are facing this issue. Peak files are generated by Premiere Pro to draw the waveform of the audio. Generating these may take some time for the longer duration files. Also, while it's generating the cache and peak files for the media you may get a media pending notification. Are you getting this issue with media files using a specific codec, or is it with all the codecs?

Also, please try these steps and check if it helps.

  • Try changing the location for the Media Cache files and Media Cache Database to a new folder possibly on a different drive (Edit>Preferences>Media Cache)
  • Go to Edit > Preferences > Media and uncheck Enable hardware accelerated decoding (requires restart)
  • If the issue is specific to h.264/h.265 codec, try transcoding the media to an edit-friendly codec like ProRes and check if it's working properly with the ProRes codec.

Let us know if it helps.

Thanks,

Sumeet

Hi Sumeet,

I appreciate your help. These are all great solutions, and if I had been a bit more patient one of them would've probably resolved the issue.

My issue was resolved though after resetting my operating system, I'm still not quite sure if the issue was premiere-related or not, but that seems to have solved it.

Truly appreciate your help, thank you.

When Premiere Pro is acting wierd it is a good idea to close all Adobe apps and trash the Preferences and in this case i would also manually delete all Media Cache files.

  1. FAQ: How to reset (trash) preferences in Premiere Pro?
  2. FAQ: How to clean (delete or trash) media cache files?

Hi, Avergahl. Thank you for your answer! I, unfortunately, however, tried both these tricks before and it did not work for me. Appreciate the help!

O.k. How did you manage the Media Cache files, did you use the Clean option in Premiere Pro or did you manually delete them while Premiere Pro was closed down? You want to manually delete them.
