Question

Premiere Pro 2019 Closed Caption

I would like to export my video with the option for a viewer to toggle on/off closed caption. The only options available when I export media under the Captions tab is None or Burn Captions Into Video. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

So the question becomes, what does Windows Media Player require to display captions. I found several sources on line (one example below). I have not tested this.

WMP uses srt sidecar file, with the same name as the video. Turning on and off is a setup feature. I don't know if there is an easy toggle option that an uninformed user might access.

So create a short test video with a few captions and give it a go. It does not matter if your caption stream in PR is Open Captions or Closed.

Let us know what you find.

The user can toggle them on or off. My point is that it depends on how you are playing the video back.

Edit: For Youtube, you export the sidecar from PR, then upload to Youtube. There are format issues in some cases; depends on what you are doing.

The video will be uploaded into LMS (Learning Management System). Once there, a manager will assign the video to an employee to view view Windows Media (our default media player).

When you say "for a viewer to toggle," the question is how are they viewing the file?

The traditional method for Closed Captions on a TV was an embedded caption stream. Where the user is watching on Youtube, Vimeo, etc., the captions are provided as a sidecar file.

The options in the export Captions tab depend on the file type and the type of caption stream you have created (Closed Caption 608 vs Open Captions for example).

Also, PR 2018 and 2019 did not have sidecar export for Open Captions in the File -> Export -> Media window. PR 2020 does. If you are working in and earlier version, you may be able to export an Open Caption stream by selecting the Caption stream in the Project Panel and File -> Export -> Caption. Or to keep changes made in the timeline, select the sequence in the Project Panel and File -> Export -> Caption.

Hello:  Thanks for your response. I was hoping that the viewer could choose to show closed caption or not. From what I can tell, that is not an option in Premiere Pro 2019. Do I have any other options other than upload the video to YouTube or Vimeo and add closed caption?
