Premiere Pro CC 2018 is Too Slow!

Not too pleased with the latest update of PP.  It is so slow that it is practically unusable to me.  Just trying to play my timeline with simple unmodified videos is not possible anymore as the lag is too much.  I have cleared my cache, turned down playback resolution, and tried everything I can to at least make it usable but it is just too slow.

I am running an aged PC Windows 10 workstation but I have a processor with 6 cores, 16GB of RAM, and a decent video card.  Just a few weeks ago before the 2018 update everything was fine and PP was quite peppy.  I am not sure if there is anything else I can try or not.  To me it seems like something is just bad with the latest update.

I do recommend Cineform proxies for all H.264 media.

This is insane. I spend 5K or more to build myself what I thought would be an amazing 4K editing beast. Here are my specs:

i9 12 core processor

32 GB RAM

MSI 1080 Ti graphics card

MSI SLI Plus X299 motherboard

M.2 drive 500 GB, 2 TB hard drive, 500 GB SSD

Soooo disappointing to constantly have a lagging editing program. I love how adobe interacts with Adobe AE but honestly this slow performance is just unacceptable. I never thought that I would even be considering Final Cut but now I may need to.

Can someone tell me why on earth my computer isn't able to scrub through this 4K footage seamlessly? I'm open to all ideas and suggestions. I just want to edit.....

Best to check on the Hardware forum. It is listed on the right side of the Overview page of this forum.

As noted in the information from trade builders Puget Systems and Safeharbor Computing, just looking at specs doesn't mean it will actually work well in video post. Many of the high power expensive CPUs perform less well in video post than some middle priced units.

And mobos are another problem as frequently they are set so that by the time we load all our cards and other devices in, there are resources conflicts. Sometimes you can get around those by simply moving a GPU to a different slot, sometimes  ... not.

Yea, it's ridiculously complicated. And too much of a crap shoot. So what is precisely the issue on any system can be a pain to trace. I did ask Puget about one system we had I was thinking of upgrading to a backup video rig, and as soon as I mentioned the mobo the reply was forget upgrading that one.

It's a notable gamer's mobo, yea, but ... in their experience, poorly set for lanes and resources allocation for video post.

Don't know what of the above may or may not apply in your particular case, but it all is something to be aware of.

2018, same issue.

Just ordered 16GB pair, CL16, 3000Mhz so hopefully that will help...

Very disappointing software. Very slow. I am UI/X and web designer - I made a video and I regretted the moment. You need 45 tutorials, 52 setting changes, 16 articles, 405 tricks and ideas for this software to work fine (Great).

Just a quick response to this statement:   Video editing. like many creative fields, is a craft best learned through mentorship.  It's highly unrealistic to assume that one can jump into the role of video editor without having put in the time as an apprentice editor, assistant editor and then lead assistant editor.  Not to mention the other roles involved in telling stories with picture and sound (creative director, producer, director, sound mixer, composer, dialog editor, color correctionist, video graphics, etc.).

An "easy edit" type video editing application like iMovie might allow someone to skip most of these steps, but those type of applications rely heavily on templates and an on a specific type of video being edited (vacations, birthdays, special events, etc.).

One could argue that Premiere Pro needs an "easy" mode, bit that's not the case in its current form as a full-featured video editing application.

I am totally fed up with Adobe and Premiere Pro. I've been using it forever and while the new features in the 2018 release were great they don't do me any good if I can't use the program.

I'm having huge issues/delays just with scrubbing and moving stuff around. It's crazy. It was working ok a couple of months ago and I never had these problems with 2017.

Had to switch back to 2017 because recently 2018 became unusable. I could never figure out what the heck was going on, half the time it would be ok, other times I'm moving stuff around and then there's a crazy delay and I then all of the sudden stuff has moved.

One problem I'm still having with 2017 and 2018 is when I'm pulling in video clips that have audio, first 4-5 no problem but sometimes after I've been working for a while editing and I pull in a clip it doesn't come in with the audio on the timeline. I can close the program and reopen and still no audio. I can then shut down my computer and restart and then it will come in with the audio. Really weird. Just been a problem in the last two versions for me.

The slowdown in 2018 is so weird. I can't figure it out - if it's a certain file type or what. I had this happen with even JPGs and a MP3 file. Became super slow and I couldn't use the timeline slider - it would show it moving in the preview window but not on the timeline.

Abode - you better get it together!

Been having huge font issues with all programs and PC's since 2017 versions as well. We now use suitcase fusion in the office because it was driving people nuts. We could add a font and it would work in Microsoft word and everywhere else but not show up in Adobe programs.

Also on a PC - you can't add a font and then have it work right away in any adobe program. This has been an issue for years. You'll often have to restart the computer to get it to show up. I know it's a windows issues but I figured the whole fonts integration would be figured out by now.

For Adobe Premiere Pro I can literally have 2017 and 2018 open at the same time and can use 2017 without any issue and 2018 has delays and problems.

Also - what the heck is up with Adobe tech support. I've tried to call a couple of times, foreign call center, the people know nothing, I know more about the software than they do, it's ridiculous. For the high cost of your products, you should be providing technical support with expert USA reps. I have better customer service from my $30 month gym staff than I do from Adobe.

So understood. The 2018 release works so differently for different users ... and you're one of the ones that is getting hammered.

PLEASE post this over on the UserVoice system as that goes immediately into the QC engineer's system and the database the upper folks use to see what needs budget and where to cut.

Same problen of lagging with me...

It takes minimum of 4 seconds to do changes (play to pause, crop, motioncontrol etc).

PP is lagging on every step.

I had come up with a compromise that "seemed" to work ok until another Adobe PP update happened and now I'm back to square one with poor performance issues.

I wouldn't waste time to the "feedback" process, I've filled it out numerous times and haven't even received an "acknowledgement" from Adobe, given that this problem has been going on ever since CC 2018 release our feedback is clearly NOT a priority for Adobe.

I keep tossing more hardware at it and it doesn't make a difference.  What I've noticed are a few issues:

1.  Windows Event Viewer (log) is frequently reporting "security access rights" issues relating to Adobe PP

2.  Mixing different 4K formats on videos that are close to 1 hr duration and moving around the timeline quickly eventually puts me into a state where I see NO video playback ... at this point Adobe enters "Not Responding" mode (a reboot or Taskmgr termination is required).

3.  Also seen multiple instances of PP running but only one is visible

There are plenty of other bugs in PP also that aren't being addressed like the Speed/Duration change dialog/window shows 100, but as soon as I start typing in textbox to change it to 200, I get some bizarre decimal value like 213109.00.  Just one example of many other bugs in PP 2018 ... for the most part I can work around all the little bugs, but the performance problems that eventually requires a reboot is something I can't continue to work around.  Going back to CC 2017 or use some other Vendor like Vegas which doesn't have these performance problems.

It baffles me that Adobe don't even acknowledge their performance problems ... even a "Yes we know we have performance issues and we're working on resolving it by XYZ date" ... but nothing, just crickets from Adobe.

Cheers, rob.

EDIT: oddly PP isn't using much of my RAM even with 4K editing ... I have 64GB and I rarely see Adobe PP use more than 7GB even though I have it set to use (via preference) A LOT more.

With the material you're using as there's long-GOP involvement, when it's not using much RAM that indicates for some reason the CPU isn't working all that fast.

No clue ... you might try doing the ppbm8 test project from Bill's Blog, formerly the Tweakers Page. It's a specially designed short project file and includes media and logger apps.

Install the loggers, run the export of the project, and upload the details. In return you get a hard data look at performance of all the gear in real PrPro action. And comparison to similar gear is then possible. You'll know exactly wher PrPro and your computer ain't getting along.

The new UserVoice system is actually being heavily used by the engineers. They knocked out a ton of bugs this last release and I give them credit for that. This forum's activities are way lower than right after previous drops.

But ... there's still some bugs to go after and clearly some performance issues. They need user data on what's problematic and that's why it's important you DO file on the Overview system.

Everything there goes right to the teams systems.

Don't know why most people here are making this so complicated without considering my suggestion. You all probably have viable issues that you mention but only one person acknowledged me. Maybe it won't work for you but this is night and day, it is working great for me so far and it is something that should be looked into. I am so happy considering I was about to throw my computer off of my balcony.

Oh btw, I know it's not related but Media Encoder stopped encoding and kept failing. I reinstalled and it is working great now! So happy x2!

Hey there,

I came to this forum because I was going to post about this same issue. My files were not huge, not 4k or anything. Premier was so slow that I couldn't work anymore. I was considering proxies but was holding off, didn't really think they would help me. Anyway, maybe this will help. I purchased a new 4tb external drive a few days ago and used that as the Premier Media Cache folder. Knock on wood but Premier so far is running great!! I played my video last night and today and there were no problems. Hope that helps!

I was about to create a post on the numbers of problems were are dealing with Adobe Premiere CC 2018...

It seems that since 2/3 years the software is getting more and mores bugs and crashes....

I am starting to think to an other solution for editing, as a professional the software start to become unreliable for a dayli use.. or heavy projects...

as other peopple ask can you make no new features for 2019 and only work on stability and perfomance?

First, my interest here isn't what we'd like to have work, but a very practical look at what actually works now. Within that view, if you're working H.264 media especially, that older 4-core CPU isn't the cat's meow. I saw an article by a very experienced builder of rigs for video post, who said for H.264 and really many of the Log media cameras, having enough fast cores properly supported with RAM is crucial.

I think his list was at least six but preferably 8 or more physical cores ("logical" cores don't count), at processing speeds at or above 4ghz, with 10-12 gigs of DDR5 RAM per core. Something like that.

My rig is only a six-core, with 32Gb RAM running at 3.6Ghz, but I'm getting by ok. I've talked with my builder, and he's willing to go to 64Gb RAM and upping the frequency if I need, says the cooling should be able to handle it.

As a post or two above talked about, "tuning" a rig can at times make significant differences. Both keeping the number of background processes down and even the order programs were installed. I've known editors who simply re-formatted the OS drive, and reinstalled the OS and programs, installing the video post apps first. Same list of programs, but PrPro worked much better.

Bill Gehrke is the expert on running PrPro from the thousands of hardware tests he's got with all sorts of rigs running a specific sequence for export while logger apps record the computer's performance. Check out his site for information, advice, and ideas. Also, you might consider running that ppbm8 test to see where your biggest bottleneck is.

Hi Neil,

It's certainly good advice to have sufficient hardware and minimize other tasks running in the background.  However, I think what many here don't understand (myself included) is why CC 2017 performs so much faster/better than CC 2018 on the exact same hardware?

I use fairly good hardware (6 and 8 and 10 real Core CPUs) all released within the last year 1 and 64GB RAM or more with very fast M.2 SSDs.

If we take a look at what's new in 2018 vs. 2017 the list is pretty short:

  • Match color across shots (no significant performance impact)
  • Lumetri Color panel changes (no significant performance impact)
  • Lumetri Color Custom LUT directory (no significant performance impact)
  • Auto-duck music (no significant performance impact)
  • Search for Motion Graphics Templates (no significant performance impact)
  • Create gradients for shapes (not sure about this one as I rarely use it, but I can't see this as having performance impact, especially when not used)
  • Replace clip workflow for Motion Graphics (AE ... possible impact to performance if using the feature)
  • Improved interface and control types (from AE ... possible impact to performance if using the feature)
  • Immersive Monitor support (VR ... never use it so don't know it's performance impact)
  • Enhanced support for Team projects (no significant performance impact)
  • Improved Timecode panel (no significant performance impact)
  • Video limiter (no significant performance impact)
  • Copy Paste sequence markers (no significant performance impact)
  • Hardware Acceleration for H.264 encoding on Win10 6th gen or later CPU (of which I use in all cases) ... high potential for performance impact
  • Dropped support for Quicktime 7 formats (high potential for performance impact) ... I don't use QT formats

So out of those changes the only one that stands out as possible source of PP performance problems is the addition of H.264 hardware acceleration on Win10 with 6th gen or later CPUs.  If one has an Intel 6th Gen CPU (6000 series or higher, which I do) then I should be seeing faster performance over PP 2017, but I'm not?  So something is not working "as expected" on the H.264 HVEC update and I suspect this is the root cause of the performance problems.  The dropping of QT7 may also be another source of why so many are having performance problems on the OSX side.

I've come up with ways to work around some of the other problems with PP 2017, but there is still a performance problem in PP 2018 that is NOT present in PP 2017.

Cheers, Rob.
