Premiere Pro CC Nested Sequence Reverse Speed Makes Black Footage

So... I have had this problem on three separate projects over the last few months.

2 of the projects were using video files and 1 of the projects used an image sequence. So type of footage does not appear to be an issue.

The issue is the same regardless. The issue below is happening using a DSLR 1080p30 sequence. I have tested this in other sequences such as AVCHD 1080p30 and HDV 1080P30. The issue does not occur on other 1080p30 sequences. It seems to be an issue with the DSLR sequence only.

Create a sequence-> place footage or images in that sequence -> make any needed edits, effects, etc. -> Place the first sequence into a new sequence (this sequence plays back fine) ->copy that sequence or nest the sequence from the project files list a second time -> right click->select "Speed/Duration"-> Click "Reverse Speed"-> Click ok.

This process should give you one nested sequence that plays forwards and one that plays backwards.

The issue that has happened repeatedly over the last few months is that the reversed sequence turns to black footage. If I expand the track the footage still shows up as a thumbnail. Also, the sequence maintains its time. The entire sequence turns black from start to finish.

This is possibly similar to the previous fixed multicam nested sequence issue but is new as of CC 14.2.

Any suggestions outside of not using that sequence type would be appreciated. Also, hopefully Adobe sees this and can verify if there is in fact an update issue that has caused this specific issue.

One more thing, I've found a temp workaround that doesn't mean I have to export intermediate files to reverse.

For my workflow - which is make loops first forward motion then reverse motion

I make my (forward motion) selects with the nested sequence, then I click on the nest and make a 'sub sequence' - I can then bring the sub sequence in and reverse. No black video. Yay, kinda. Now can Adobe fix it so it just does what you'd expect?

I have this problem (roughly) one in 50 times! I'm on whatever the last CC version is (updated a month ago and always up to date).

I am using progressive footage and all my sequence settings are appropriate. I have many short composited (green screen) sequences, each one nested into a new sequence.  The new sequence will play for, say 4 seconds, and then I put the same duplicated clip in.. and make that play in reverse. Every once in a while on reversal the clip goes "black".. it stays in the sequence, but does not play out in the program monitor. I have tried deleting render files, restarting, changing the nested clip duration.. and I can't fix it. I'm about to hack it by exporting my composite and reversing that in a fresh sequence. It's a massive pain, as it is wasting time, and I can't see why it is happening only very occasionally. My process (and filters) are the same for all the composited and edited clips.

I've also noticed PP hates multiple short sequences in one project. I often have to force quit a "bad close" with PP on these unusual multiple sequence projects. I miss the ole pasty-grey FCP these days. At least you always knew how it would behave, and mostly that was unsurprising.

It seems I had the same problem. This link provide solution: CreativeCOW
Essential it is interlaced footage problem. Nest it and than reverse nested clip.

I had effect for stabilisation on clip, which does not work if speed is altered. So it was already nested. So I nested that nested clip again and worked after. I dedicated F12 key for nesting, since I nest most of my clips.

PS: For me this was the first time interlaced footage being reversed resulted blank screen. I had 50p timeline and 25i footage on it, than Stabilisationb effect on it, and nested and reversed. It worked initially, but after tweaking it failed to show.

Hi SwiftArt,

I've been having the same problem as well with image sequences, although I'm only having a few seconds of the sequence go black instead of the whole thing - ie. the first or last few seconds of the clip.

This is not quite a solution but a workaround, but I've been rendering the original sequence to a video file and then importing it back in and then reversing it. It is fine for the time being, but of course an actual fix from Adobe would be much appreciated.

Hope this is helpful and not merely a reiteration of what you've already been doing.
