Ive worked out its because i have to have the default monitor as monitor 1 and can then extend the others (3 in all)

only problem is the hdmi on my new graphics card (gtx 1070ti) is now monitor 1 which originally was my big monitor!

any way to change the identity of each monitor?

I've been working multiple monitors on PC for years, through several machines and Windows versions.

If you go into the Windows display setup screen, you can assign a display to particular number. You then need to refresh and reboot. Maybe a coupon times before it actually believes you.

I think after all these years, Windows still doesn't do multiple monitors very well.  I've given up on the idea and instead go for one large monitor.
