Premiere Pro is suddenly lagging

I’ve been working on a project for quite some time now, and I’ve already rendered five versions of it without any issues. I wanted to render version 6, but all of a sudden, some of my drone footage has started lagging badly.

Normally, I fix lagging by rendering the footage in and out, or by rendering the entire project, but neither solution is helping this time. Several drone shots are now lagging in the timeline, while the exact same clips play perfectly fine when I open them separately in QuickTime. They worked fine before, so something must be wrong within PP. Of course, Premiere Pro is up to date.

I’ve already updated my MacBook and checked for possible memory issues, but that doesn’t seem to be the cause either.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or how I can fix it?

Hi Kevin, I was a bit sceptical about your solution since I already deleted the cache before, but clearing the loading cache and disabling the third party plugins worked! You are the best!

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi David,
Thanks for your post. I hope I can assist you. Since the clips worked fine before and still play correctly in QuickTime, I’d start by clearing Premiere’s cache.

Quit Premiere, then hold Option/Alt/Shift while launching it to bring up the Reset Options dialog. Choose Delete all media cache files. You can also try Reset plug-in loading cache and Disable third-party plug-ins for that launch. I would not reset your preferences at this point.

If it’s still happening, right-click one of the affected drone clips and choose Render and Replace, using ProRes 422, then see if that clip plays normally.

Try those first and report back with what happens. Sorry for the frustration.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Cool, David. Thanks for letting us know. Do you have any effects applied to these drone shots? Wondering what might be the culprit. Glad you are back on track.

    Thanks,
