Premiere Pro - Not copying over motion attributes of clips when duplicating / copying and pasting from sequence to sequence

Ok so this is really annoying me.

When copying and pasting clips on premiere pro from one sequence to another, it's not copying the motion attributes. So if a clip has been scaled up to fit the frame size, or if I have used keyframing for the ken burns kind of effect, it's not copying those attributes onto the other sequence when pasting, or when duplicating a sequence.

Am i missing something? or is this a bug?

Premiere pro version 2017.1.2 - macbook pro os siera 10.12.6

Thanks

I had this problem, it has to do with whether you global "Default Media Scaling" settings are set to

(None, Scale to frame size, or Set to frame size)

You can access the settings under Preferences / Media, and there should be a drop box about 5 lines down that says "Default Media Scaling" you can change the options in the drop box.  Off the top of my head I can't remember which one it should be set to, I think it should be Set to none.  But try changing it and see if the problem persists.

    My understanding is as follows:

None - copies and pastes without any motion attributes, and if you bring any clip into the sequence it put's it at it's previous scale or defaults at 100%, regardless of the source or sequence size settings.  i.e.  if you are editing in a 1080p sequence and bring in a 4k shot, the shot will be much larger then the 1080 frame and the scale will be at 100%.  You would need to drop this down to 50% to downscale it into the sequence and fill the frame.  I believe this is the setting you want when copy/pasting in the sequence because it doesn't try to overwrite the source settings in any way when you paste it.

Set to frame size - this will resize the source to fit full frame into the sequence and the scaling will reflect that action.  My previous example would bring the 4k shot in automatically at 50%.  I think when this is set this way, whenever you copy/paste a clip within the sequence, it re-scales it to fill the frame regardless of if you had different settings applied to it.

Scale to frame size - this one looks like "set" to frame size.. but it rasterizes the image (which means you actually loose quality if you upscale past 100%.  I think this is an option to help system performance, though I haven't seen a difference).  In the 4k example, it fills the frame, but down-samples it, so when you look in the motion tab, it will now say 100% instead of 50%.  If memory serves, this is another NONO when copy/pasting within the sequence as it would really mess with your settings.  Copying a 4k clip with a scale 60% in a 1080p sequence at "Set to frame size" would turn it into a 120% scale in a sequence with "Scale to frame size" - so I think it just doesn't do any of that and resets the motion attributes to 100%.

I had these problems when I was editing a 4k short in a 1080p sequence, so I could reframe my source shots as needed.  I set it to "Set to frame size" as I brought all the clips in, so I could just start editing without having to resize each clip each time.. but started noticing, that if I scaled some shots from a wide into a CU (80% or something) if I duplicated it, or copied down later in the timeline, it would reset back to 50% and I'd loose my settings or keyframes.  I could always copy/paste attributes from the original, and it would be fixed, but it drove me crazy why it was doing that.

    Hope this helps.

Check the sequence settings on the problem sequence to see that they match those of the rest of the project. I had mine way to big - probably a mistake upon importing clips - and the position and size adjustments were not visibel when I copied it into the main sequence. When I changed the Height and Width in the sequence settings to match the rest of the project the motion atributes copied over.

Huge help!!  Thank you.  It was completely obvious... of course only after reading your post.  Thanks again.

Is the problem with all of the motion attributes, or just scale? I had a similar problem with scale values not copying over, and it turns out it's a function of the "Set to Scale" preference, which will automatically rescale any newly placed media on the timeline to fit the sequence settings.

In my case, copying already keyframed Scale and Position parameters weren't in the clips after pasting.  Resetting Preferences cleared it up.  Had nothing to do with "set to frame size" or "scale to frame size" settings...the clips were already on the timeline.  Ann Benns suggested the trashing (resetting) of preferences...which I tried later after a seperate post...just needed more info because I was in the middle of a large project.  So Ann's suggestion worked in my case.

I can't duplicate this on 2017.1.2 under Windows 10.  Everything works as it should.

Is the same behaviour happening when you duplicate a sequence?

No, it's not. I thought it was but just double checked and its just copying and pasting

Trash your preferences to see if that will solve the issue.
