Premiere Pro "Quit Unexpectedly" during export

Hello,

I've tried to export my sequence multiple times using both premiere pro and media encoder. Each time I tried to export, the applications would quit unexpectedly. For the record, I have exported the sequence many times using Vimeo 720 preset.

Macbook Pro (15 inch, mid 2010)

2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

8GB RAM

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

500 GB Solid State Drive (Samsung) - 50GB free Space

Source footage/project on a 1TB external drive via USB

Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015.3

Adobe Media Encoder CC 2015.3

Sequence: 1920x1080 - 23.976 fps - Progressive - 48000 Hz, Stereo

Sequence Duration: 3 minutes - 8 seconds - 6 frames

Source Footage: mostly 4K MPEG footage from the Sony A7R ii camera. Some 1080p MPEG

Workflow: Edited using 720p Proxy files. Reconnected all the HQ/4K files. Downscaled to fit 1920x1080. Then color graded and added some effects. Exported in 720 to test out the color grade. Made changes. Now I want to export a final version to be uploaded to YouTube and Vimeo.

Effects used: All clips have Lumetri color grade. Some have a simple magic bullet looks. Some Denoiser II. A few clips I used Twixtor for Slow Motion.

Export Settings: H.264 - YouTube 1080p HD preset

Estimated  Export Time: approx. 5 hours. (for a 3min video??? this seems unreal.)

I have been closing all other apps during export and disconnecting from internet. Keeping my laptop from sleeping by using Caffeine App. Still, after a few hours the application closes with message "Premiere Pro (or Media Encoder) quit unexpectedly. I can't say at what point the export quit. What am I doing wrong??

I am aware there is an update for the apps, but I'm afraid that updating will screw everything up.

Correct answer mgugger

I just successfully exported a h.264 - Youtube HD 720 version.... why will that work and not h.264 1080??

Through a series of rendering experiments, I figured out that one of the clips seemed to cause the crash. Every time the render or export got to the point of that clip, it crashed.

I deleted the clip from the timeline, and resourced it... Just finished exporting a 1080 Youtube version successfully.

Still strange that I was able to export 720 with the corrupted clip.

The export still took about 3 hours but I do think that is due to my machine's limitations and all the heavy effects such as Twixtor slow motion, Denoisers, Color grades etc.

Your problem is probably caused by your USB 2.0 port not being able to support reading you data fast enough, Especially if you drive is quite full.  USB 3.0 is quite capable of doing what you are asking for but USB 2.0 that your computer has is hopeless especially when you start throwing 4K media at it.

Also your down-scaling will not use your GT330M as it only has 512 MB of Video RAM and Adobe CUDA requires a minimum of 1GB.

My drive is a WD Passport with "USB 3.0" - 1TB. EDIT: I see what you mean, my computer is USB 2.0 which does not help even if my drive is 3.0?

Should I attempt to move everything to a LaCie External Drive which connects via Fire Wire?

If you drive a sports car that will go 150mph, but you are on a two lane road with a 55 speed limit... you go at 55mph

Firewire is MUCH better than USB2

Thanks for sharing, I read through that. My laptop doesn't crash, freeze or shut down. Just the application "quits unexpectedly". I have been keeping an eye on the activity monitor which does read at

I suppose that it is a hardware issue then?

currently have an icepack under my laptop to help keep it cool.

Current Export: 9% - 4hrs 30min..

I have cleaned my media caches and am going to try again, this time I will export it to the external drive where all the source footage is and see if that makes a difference.

Before I was exporting to the laptop's hard drive.

Currently at 3% - 3hrs 25min... the time seems to keep rising.
