Premiere Pro V 22.0 Completely Unstable and Unusable

I upgrade to V 22.0. I cannot play back clips on my timeline without glitches, lags, freezes, beach balls etc. It is unusable. Source monitor plays back just fine, but when I bring a clip into my timeline forget it.

Needed to revert back to V15.4.1 until this gets sorted out.

At first I thought it was a Mac software update and I updated to Monterey, but that didn't fix the issue.

My specs if it helps

Imac Pro 2017

OS: Same issue happened on both Big Sur and Monterey

Processor: 2.3 GHz 18-Core Intel Xeon W

Memory: 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4

Graphics: Radeon Pro Vega 56 8 GB

Andrew,

Sorry, man. I have everything working well on my Mac. Please delete media cache with all projects closed. Please also trash preferences. These steps are crucial if you update a project file to a new major version. Report back after trying these things.

Thanks,
Kevin

I deleted media cache with all projects closed and started a brand new project and am still facing the same issue. Though i'm not sure what you mean by trash preferences.

What are your system specs? Premiere V 22.0 works great on my brand new Imac Pro with M1 Max chip for instance but not my 2017 Imac pro, which is more than capable of playing back these files flawlessly.

First, you can keep multiple major versions installed without troubles. Thankfully. My 'new' machine only has back through 2019 installed. But my old one now in another room has clear back to 2014, including SpeedGrade.

Second ... when installing a new major version, I don't know if you cleared your cache before launching. Which can help keep crud getting made by mixing stuff up.

And ... it's best to always create a new project in the new version, then from that project, in the MediaBrowser panel, navigate to and select the old project file. Right-click and import the assets of that project.

This does two things.

  • you get the cleanest, most likely to succeed migration of your project, and
  • you still have the old untouched project file if the new version doesn't work correctly with that project.

Coupled with never ever letting it remove a previous version you can test a new major version without interrupting your work. When it's stable, migrate.
