Premiere Pro v23.1 - Error retrieving frame xxxxx at time xxxxx

Error retrieving frames xxxx at time xxxx

Has apperently been an issue for quite some time, on multiple builds with most of the explanations that I can find seemingly blaming the issue on hardware of one form or another so I'll provide my system specs at the end of the post. Other explanations seem to blame the source file or the video equipment used so I'll provide file info and camera specs at the end also. None of the explanations that I can find actually solve the problem.

I would like a resolution to this issue, please.

Ironically, I can run Premiere Rush error free using the exact same computer and the exact same source file that Premiere Pro can't process without errors.

Good luck, Warren. I will happily pass any sample footage to the developers if you like. Oddly, this format worked most of the time until now. I hope I can help you solve this issue.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Warren,

Sorry for the frustration. The footage you are dealing with is non-performant. Your computer might not be able to reliably handle such a format as it is. A more powerful Intel CPU, like an 11-13th generation i9 could do it, though. I would either transcode to ProRes 422 or LT or create proxies for the footage. Optimizing highly compressed media before editing a project is normal with this kind of footage and most computers.

I hope that will work for you.

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

After reading and rereading your response while typing up a longwinded retort this phrase resonated suddenly "Optimizing highly compressed media before editing a project" and so I went back and read the manual on the CANON XF605 again. Specifically the section that discusses the video recording configuration and the selectable options for video format. And found this in the fineprint of the section that discusses XF-AVC format "The camera uses a variable bit rate (VBR). Intra-frame options compress the image after analyzing each frame separately and are more appropriate for editing".

MP4(HEVC) is not Intra-frame. (emphasis added)

So, although I was able to produce videos from source files using the MP4(HEVC) format successfully on 37 out of 39 videos since I purchased this camera in May without incident until the recent switch to v23.1, I am going to reconfigure the camera to use the XF-AVC format and see what happens.

Wish me luck.

HEVC is not an editing codec. Canon does not care about you editing footage from it's cameras. They only care about recording in the most storage friendly manner. Because you were able to edit 37 out of 39 videos in HEVC does not make HEVC a good editing codec. I could jump in an alligator pit and not get bit 37 out of 39 times, but that does not make jumping in an alligator pit a good idea.

Please let us know if you get better performance with the intra-frame format. Even that might not be enough and may require proxies, depending on your rig, and of course, the footage.
