Premiere Production Has Very Slow Playback in Timeline

Hi Y'all,

So basically, it takes a good 20-30 seconds from the time I hit the spacebar for the timeline to actually play. No matter what I've done over the years, this issue still persists.

For some background: I've been working on a short documentary project since 2019 which has a lot of footage shot across different cameras--all H.264 along with some scanned archive footage and some phone footage (iPhone 6s) in VFR. I've toggled all of these to ProRes Proxies (with the corresponding settings), transcoded all H.264 VFR footage to ProRes CFR footage in Shutter Encoder (frame blending to 23.976 fps) and matched everything so that they work with my 1920x1080p 23.976 timeline. Given the amount of footage, I've even converted my big Premiere Pro Project into a Production following this tutorial.

I've updated all my drivers, my premiere is up to date with the latest version, and I've scoured this support community for anything that might help--so what am I missing?

Below are my specs:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor 3.80 GHz

OS: Windows 10

OS Drive: 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2

Motherboard: Asrock B550 Phantom Gaming 4/ac

Memory: 64GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB PRO 3200MHz (2x32GB)

Graphics Cards: NVIDIA 8GB GeForce RTX 3060

Additonally, I'm editing off a Samsung T-7 external SSD plugged into some no-name USB Gen 2(?) hub. I've tried different hubs to see if it was a speed issue but this is the only one that ever seems to work. Plus, everything else in Premiere seems to run quickly except for playback so how could that be the issue? Again, I could be overlooking something right in my face.

Anyway, I appreciate any help I can get on this. It's a very very important project to me and time is of the essence. The sooner I can solve this technical issue the sooner I can actually edit.

Thank you all!

Hi Jorenzo,

I read your post and you say you are having performance issues, even though you are using ProRes proxies. It seems like everything should work OK. You mentioned a "hub" with is connected via USB-2. That sounds like a bottleneck. I would take that out of the pipeline and see how things work if you bypassed it.  Let us know if that works.

Thanks,
Kevin

Like Kevin said, it's seems you've done the right moves.

If connecting your T-7 directly into the motherboard doesn't work all the way, I'd condider copying the footage to a local  drive, in particular your 970evo. You can copy your .prproj file before trying these things, so you always have the original to go back to. Let us know.

MyerPJ, thanks for your follow up! I did end up plugging the T-7 straight to the motherboard and that seemed to fix the issue. If it comes up again though, I'll definitely try copying to the 970evo now that I know it's an option.

Hi Kevin,

You were correct thank you! I ended up plugging my T-7 straight to the motherboard and that solved the issue. Bittersweet to know such a simple fix took care of a lot of heartache. Appreciate the quick response.
