Question

Premiere will not open because missing codec

I have used premiere on this computer to open all these files before and it was just fine. I havnt been on in a while and now all of a sudden over half of the videos I have will not open because of missing codec it says. They will also not open in Quicktime. But they will open just fine and play in VLC.

When I get the info for the file, it says Codecs: VP6F, MPEG Layer 3

I am using a mac

I don't know what it could be because I thought a codec is for a computer and not just for a program, sorta. I could be wrong on that. I just dont understand why it would open in VLC but not premiere.

    What is the file extension?

VLC doesn't care about videos like Premiere does. PrPro has to generate real frames you can edit with, whereas VLC can just playback anything. If there's a corrupt frame, you'll notice it in PrPro over VLC every time.

The files extensions range. Just went through a few of them. One was .mov and another was .avi. Im pretty sure there was another one that was .flv too. some other movs work just fine.

    Hey koots,

With situations like mixed media, I usually place all the files in Media Encoder and encode everything to a codec that makes the footage standardized and easier to work with: ProRes, DNxHD, or CIneform. Can you try that?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Which version of Premiere Pro are you working with, koots?

    Thanks,

    Where did the files originate?

Most of them were just downloaded from youtube. I make trashy collage video art so I don't really need great quality.

As far as I know, MP3 is an audio file... I have never heard of VP6F, but since I am on Windows that may be a Mac thing
