Both Jim and BrandedChannels have good points. Although, I’m a little surprised your system has trouble simply playing back the files, even before you’ve added any color grades or effects or anything. Most decent systems can at least smoothly PLAY even a 4K H.264 file without rendering or creating proxies. I have no problem playing mine. So BOTH your internal boot drive AND media drive are SSD? And your media files are on the SSD? Just double checking based on your wording.

I found out.. that there is something in missing in intel i7-2000 and 3000 series...... processors...   even with a GTX980 4GB     as soon as I tried phatom 4 Pro real 4K footage I noticed I could play them fluidly on my i7-4710HQ.....

oh... and I notice that windows plays the,.... fluidly... on the older i7 machine. but not premiere..... so there must be optimizations that premiere can use in i7-4000 series that work just fine.

I do recommend the Proxy work flow linked to above for all H.264 media.  Stick to the included Cineform presets.

4K footage that's heavily compressed such as the native MP4s from the P4P take quite a beefy system for smooth playback. Have you transcoded the footage since you state that the files are .mov?

You may need to render out the previews before getting smooth playback in PPro, by choosing Render In to Out under the Sequence menu. This will forcily turn the yellow lines into green ones on the timeline. Just hitting Enter will not have this effect (default behavior in PPro is that only red areas will be rendered out), which is why I have remapped CTRL/CMD+Enter to the Render In to Out function.

    Hope this helps.

Alternatively, you may opt to Work offline using proxy media |
