Question

preview HDR on HDR broadcast monitor

I try to understand the HDR workflow of Premiere Pro. One of the things is: how do I get an accurate preview on an HDR broadcast monitor? I run into some problems with it.

My setup: HP Z840 workstation, Win 10, Quadro K5200, Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme SDI output connected to an Atomos SUMO19 HDR display that is set to Rec 2100 PQ BT 2084 curve and Rec 2020 gamut.

When I ie. want to grade Sony FS7 XAVC files that are recorded with a Slog3 gamma curve, I set the Premiere scopes and waveform to HDR and Rec 2020 gamut, and I switch the Lumetri HDR mode on. I can now push the exposure so high, that on the Lumetri Waveform the signal peaks above 100nits, while maintaining all the detail. But on my Program Monitor window and also on my SDI output: everything above 100 nits (=100% SDR white) is overexposed/clipping in the Whites. All that detail is gone. It looks like the Lumetri scopes support HDR, but the preview on my program monitor, and also my SDI output with the Adobe Mercury Transmit is downgraded to SDR Rec709 signal, where everything higher than 100 nits is being cut-off. On my HDR monitor I see on the waveform a SDI signal that is extremely overexposed.

Is it possible to change this behaviour? This way, I cannot color grade HDR in Premiere Pro, because the preview seems to be downgraded to SDR. This way the HDR preview in Premiere Pro is unreliable, because I don't know what Premiere Pro is doing with it.

Is there anyone from Adobe that could clarify something about this? Is there a link to some documentation? Or is Adobe planning an upgrade regarding to previewing HDR on an external HDR monitor? I would be glad to hear something.

How has nobody from Adobe responded to this absolutely foundational question? 3 years ago they parade around their new support for HDR workflows but still can't answer a basic question about how one might get an accurate signal out of premiere for monitoring? In their product announcement they even mentioned support for monitoring the new HDR workflow but there seems to be nothing online about this. Maybe only certain i/o devices enable this ability through Mercury Transmit? Who knows? Adobe doesn't document this stuff. It's absurd.

I would also like an answer from Adobe if at all possible.I'm thinking about updating my kit to what the OP says but I'm unconvinced there is any point to doing so.

What I have read recently, not from Adobe, is that Premiere is not color managed, that Lumetri processes media in Rec.709 and then converts it back to Rec.709. The author of the document I read stated it will not be possible to Monitor HDR for this reason.

I'm worried the problem is bigger than that, e.g. the comment above about Mercury Transmit..

On the other hand YouTube believes that it is possible:

Upload High Dynamic Range (HDR) videos - YouTube Help

So it is very confusing.

I don't have the equipment to test this, but I have seen it reported in the forums that Mercury Transmit limits output to Rec. 709 even with UHD media.

You might have to move to Resolve here.  Fortunately, version 14 is not only free, but a competent NLE.
