Preview shows last frame of clip, not current frame - only for proxy media - How can I solve?

I am editing a project shot on the FS7 at 4k 50p

All the 50p footage has been interpreted as 25p in order to use slow motion.

I have also created proxy files for all the clips for faster playback and editing, something I do on all projects.

However, every time the clip is paused the preview shows the last frame rather than the current frame when viewing the proxy output in either the source monitor or the program monitor. This is obviously a nightmare to edit with! The clips play back exactly the same when not paused, it is just that when the proxy file is paused it only shows the last frame.

I am assuming this is something to do with interpreting the footage and a preview file not being created properly but I can't seem to find a work around and have never encountered this before.

Any one got any ideas?

This came up in another thread with a workaround

The built-in proxies don't work properly with time-remapped clips. There's a way to do it though ...

  • In the Project panel, select the original clip/s that have been interpreted (time change) and need proxies
  • Right-click, Proxies/create proxies; AME will launch, switch to that app immediately and ...
  • Stop the encoding process in AME before it finishes, and select that clip then right-click "Reset Status"
  • Select (all clips, if working a number of them), right-click and select "Interpret footage" setting the timebase to that of the modified originals;
  • click the go-ahead arrow to process the proxies; when complete, all but the stopped/reset clip will show in PrPro as "attached" in the PrPro Project panel.
  • For the clip that was stopped/reset, right-click on the original media clip/s in PrPro, right-click, "Proxies/Attach Proxies"
  • Select the clip, then navigate to where the proxies are stored on disc, select, "attach" and voila.

Thanks Jim - You're pretty much right: Basically the proxy doesn't like the footage being 'interpreted' at a different frame rate, and for some reason this stops the preview working correctly.

However, if I select all the 50fps clips in the project bins and select 'speed change' then change 100% to 50% to play out 50fps at 25p then it works fine. The proxies play back in slow motion and show the right preview when paused.

I didn't need to change the format, prores still worked fine, it just that interpreting the footage at a different frame rate caused bugs with the proxy files.

Problem solved.

Proxies and speed changes don't mix.  You might be better off transcoding the footage to Cineform files.
