Question

Projects still exist but EVERYTHING in them disappeared (media files, timelines, etc.)

Went to open something I was working on yesterday and NOTHING came up when I opened the project file. This isn't the same as the "missing file source" error where it shows you a Red/Yellow warning and ! mark. For each project there was nothing in the media files window, nothing in the timeline - looks like a freshly created project.

What's more, this happened to all of my projects on this computer; they all have nothing in them and are all now suddenly 6 KB file size. No warning or alert at all indicating something even went wrong. Its as if someone logged onto my computer and cleared all the work from each project. I only have a few non important things here so it isn't a massive loss but it is concerning and scary.

Any thoughts?

as Harold suggested, check your autosave folder.   I keep my project files in a folder on my boot drive that's automatically mirrored on dropbox.  I pay a monthly fee to dropbox (which I find a very useful tool for other uses than this) so when a file gets updated, dropbox keeps the previous version available for 30 days...    I keep my autosave folder on my media drive.  so my projects are being stored in 3 places (one of these is on the cloud).   And this all happens automatically if I set up the project properly when I create it...

Ok after giving up on this last year and coming back to some editing for work I ran into this problem again. It does seem to have to do with Auto Save. Couple follow up notes/questions

1) seems like only some projects are generating auto save folders? The ones that don't seem to be completely lost as described in the OP. How can I make sure everything gets an auto save folder?

2) The ones that do have the auto save folders will only pull up the project if I select one of the auto saved versions from the folder - the actual project file gives me a blank project most of the time. Is there a way to make sure I can regularly pull up the actual project and not have to use auto saved versions?

Hi @Chase24301245l2en
Thanks for the note. Sounds like you are describing weird behavior with your Auto Save folder. Is it saved on your main computer hard drive, or an attached drive? Have you checked your Project Settings > Scratch Disk? Let us know.

Thanks,

Kevin

Very bizarre, Chase. Was there anything unusual about these project files? Are they stored on a SAN or NAS? Are they Team Projects, Shared Projects, or part of a Production? Let me know.

Thanks,
Kevin

No nothing at all. I admit I am not totally well versed in what "special projects" might entail but as far as I know they were totally normal.
