Question

Random freeze + black screen in Premiere Pro — could my motherboard be the issue?

Hi all,

I’ve run into a strange problem twice now while working in Adobe Premiere Pro. Everything runs normally, then suddenly the screen freezes for a moment, goes completely black, and the only way to get it back is to restart the PC using the case power button.

I’ve already set up everything needed for Premiere Pro and updated my GPU drivers, and I’m currently using the NVIDIA Studio driver.

My system:

  • Intel Core i3 10th Gen

  • B560M GAMING HD

  • 16 GB RAM

  • NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti (recently installed)

  • Thermaltake Smart BX1 650W PSU (recent upgrade)

  • Redragon CC-2177 ARGB CPU cooler (recent upgrade)

Could this be related to my motherboard, or is it more likely a GPU, driver, or power issue?

Hey Shyhan,

Sorry for the trouble. I wanted to add to Jonesvid's suggestions. I'm assuming that your CPU has integrated graphics. If so, please update your Intel GPU drivers, open the Device Manager, and temporarily disable your 1660 Ti GPU. Launch Premiere Pro and check if the problem persists. If it does, try disabling the integrated GPU instead.

Thanks,

Ishan

For a Bios from 2021 I would certainly update to the latest. If you go on the Asus web site ( I assume it's ASUS) it should auto detect the motherboard and prompt all updates to download including Chipset updates etc.

The Bios update on newer ASUS boards now generally uses a dual back up mechanism so if the upgrade fails it reverts to the old Bios.

Follow the procedures very carefully.

Setup to the default settings initially.

As regards Premiere you should definitely Reset your preferences to ensure any old info on the previous setup is gone. Hold shift key on Premiere Start up and select Reset preferences.

You will need to setup preferences again of course.

I would definitely recommend your next upgrade should be 32GB ram (matched dual 16GB pair)

I usually use Corsair memory,

Thanks for the information.
And it's a gigabyte motherboard.

Sudden black screen often indicates instability of some kind such as memory.
It happened to me way back when I had two 16GB sticks of Ram and discovered that the online shop had shipped me two unmatched sticks of Ram with incompatible memory timing.

The 160 GB should be ok but I wouldn't consume too much as Premiere can buffer and use a lot more temporary storage than you think.
Check the Bios update..

Use auto tune settings. I do not mess with memory timings or overclock on my current 13900k system.

Finally have you reset preferences and flushed Media Cache since your upgrades!

I always go for clean installation of driver updates - the choice is often given versus overwrite of existing driver.

Yes, I’ve already flushed the Media Cache in Premiere Pro since the upgrades.

Regarding the BIOS, my current version is F6 from 2021 (B560M GAMING HD), and the latest available on Gigabyte’s site is F15b from June 2025, so it would be quite a big jump. Do you think I should be concerned about updating it given the gap in versions, or is it generally safe as long as I follow the instructions carefully?

Does your PC crash like this on any other program you run.?

Since upgrading have you run your PC with any stress test program such as CineBench R23 to test out memory stability etc.

Ensure all drivers are up to date and the Studio driver for RTX 1660 Ti direct off Nvidia site.
Avoid Windows Uodate installed drivers if you can . Always go to manufacturers hardware drivers directly like Intel.
Use the Intel driver scan and install Support assistant tool.
Also check your Bios is updated to the latest firmware that motherboard.

For Premiere Pro I would always use a minimum of 32GB ram as this has to be shared with the operating system and other concurrent programs.

What type of hard disk are you using and how much free space do you have ?

Hello,

Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a 1 TB HDD and a 256 GB M.2 SSD, but most of the storage is almost full. The drive where I’m running Adobe Premiere Pro has only about 160 GB of free space. Other software I use doesn’t crash, so it seems isolated to Premiere.

All GPU and Windows drivers are fully up to date. I’m not sure if my BIOS is updated to the latest version.

Thank You
