Re Source Monitor & Set to Frame Size

Two problems I haven't been able to solve after trying for several days: bonehead questions -- sorry.

The most bonehead, question. The images appear correct in the Program Monitor--as they should. But in the Source Monitor they appear magnified (zoomed), so that only a part of the image is seen. How can i make the image appear not magnified in the Source Monitor?

My still images (from photographs) are "set to frame size" in the time line, so that i can zoom (animate) in the Effects Panel without distorting the image. In the Effects, they typically show up as scaled at 40% to 60% or so at their full size (which is what i want, before animation). For some reason some of my older photographs --some or all are jpg's--relatively small in pixel dimensions,  show up with a scale as being something like 120% or more to start. If I magnify (zoom) these, I will being distorting them. Why aren't they coming in at under 100% to start as most of the other images?

thank you as always,

    1. Dont open clip from the timeline. Clip in the timeline that are larger then the sequence setting will also be larger in the SM.

    2. If your older jpg's are smaller in height and width then your sequence setting they will be set at a larger percentage which will be over 100%.

    1) Make sure your source Monitor  display is set to Fit:

    2) Because the source images are smaller than the dimensions of you timeline, so they are being enlarged to fit per your Set to Frame Size instruction.

Thank you both. Source Monitor was set to Fit but I didn't know you should not open it from TL. And as for the set to frame question, I guess if I opened the small images in Photoshop, scaled them up to larger size, and saved all of that correctly, they would show up under 100% when set to Frame. I'll try that.
