Question

Recording a DJ SET - synching a master audio (clean recording) with multiple short tracks (iPhone)

Hey there,

I’m having a bit of a problem with the syncing options in Adobe Premiere.

Here’s the scenario:

We want to create short social media clips of a friend who is a DJ.

I have one clean, continuous audio recording of her set, directly recorded from the PA with a recorder. It has a duration of 1.5 hours.

I also have about 50 short video clips, all containing audio of different moments (and therefore different tracks) from the concert recorded with an iPhone. All of them have a short duration (50 seconds max).

What I want to do is sync the master audio (clean) with the cellphone recordings (which contain crowd cheers and a bit of atmosphere) to have a more balanced final audio—possibly having the option to weigh both tracks. Then, I want to sync this combined audio with the video.

What could be my approach here?

When I put both audio tracks in a new project, Adobe fails to sync via waveform. Essentially, I have the loud and somewhat dirty recording failing to find its position on the long, clean track.

I was hoping that the automation of the wavelength sync would spare me the trouble of manually searching the audio of the short iphone clips on the long clean track - is this even possible? Will Adobe always fail if there are no clean recordings with somewhat similar waveforms?

How do professionals handle this?

What would be a somewhat manageable approach for the next shows?

Thanks for your help!

Have you tried the Multicam process?

Hey Neil, thank your for your fast reply, got caught up in some other techincal difficulties but now I'm back at the topic. No, I did not try the multicam process, just found a useful article and I am working my way through it. I'll report back in a bit

Good to hear. And yea, we all tend to be busy at times, at least ... hopefully!
