recreating the look of an old-time silent movie

This is a question about aspect ratio and Adobe Premiere settings. I'm shooting and editing a silent movie that will be displayed by computer projector to 300 people. My Canon XA-H1 produces great HDV images and I want to use and keep the highest resolution possible, but the end product will look more realistic if it's 4.3.

My thought was to use guides in the viewfinder while shooting to keep the action in a safe 4.3 area and then import the footage into a Premiere CC 2017 project.

Which sequence settings should I use coupled with which export settings?

Apologies if this question betrays a lack of understanding of what's really going on. And thanks.

A sequence of 1440 x 1080 (square pixel) will provide the desired ratio.

Exporting at 1920 x 1080 (square pixel) will add the black side bars and keep compatibility.

Have a look at Rocketstock, they have free templates for Premiere and if I remember correctly one of them was an old timey filter that gave the look of a VHS grainy distortion.

Thank you, Jim. I tried your answer and it worked. Sequence settings are a little foggy to me. Generally I let the Prelude change the them to match the footage settings because I always shoot with the same camera.
