Relinking automatically to wrong files

Question

Q: Is there any way to disable/control the auto relinking behaviour?

BG:

Managing in this post refers to what is called consolidation in Avid (although it requires transcoding in PP)

Took over a job that had been edited separately (with full copy of media) and returned to base as a 'managed' (i.e. transcoded to new, shorter files) project. This was done to ensure any fresh media added travelled back to base.

This resulted in some incorrect relinking (both to fundamentally different, full length, files with the same name and to the wrong part of original, long, files that had been managed).

I saw this first hand when trying to micro manage the correct shots (to send to VFX) by sub-sequencing those shots, export the subsequence as a fresh project, managing the media, then copying the managed section back to the sequence in the main project.

Rather than retaining the link to the managed media, recent versions of PP do a relinking/relinking process and link back to the beginning of the original long clips (ie both original path & align time code not respected).

Partly this is down to managed behaviour that names first transcoded file exactly the same as source and subsequent files have a number appended.

(With the progress window open I noticed that the relinking process seems to occur when opening a project - even if that project was only just saved and no linking has changed.)

PP 23.2.x on MacOS, Editshare storage.

Let us know.Thanks,KevinHey KevinThat job is out the door, but the automatic relinking & naming of managed clips are both potentially tricky/non-intuitivefor users of 26.2+Most times it will just be the odd file that can be relinked manually & users will not even think about why it happened.Will manifest itself at bigger houses, rather than standalone users, I think. e.g. multiple users on large NAS with multiple paths to archive that also have needs to project manage / are sloppy with naming.Another place I work with very similar workflows have just jumped from v24 to v26 for this football season. They deal with very tight turnaround/live & this kind of detective work could well cause them grief.Only occasionally will it be catastrophic (i.e. on this occasion the edit assistants hadn't noticed the errors, the incorrect shots passed through VFX - only noticed on final review - fortunately we had just enough time & resources to repair).

It's good practice, especially in large projects, to enforce unique filenames for all media, even transcodes, as this will make relinking much easier. Can you append something to the names of those managed files so they don't share the same name as your original media?

Also, I found part of your post a little hard to follow, but it sounds like you may be working in Team Projects or a Production. If that's the case, I want to confirm whether the linking issue occurs when the media is in one project and the sequence is in another, or if everything is in the same project.
