Question

Render and export errors - how to fix?

Adobe Premiere v 25.5.0 Build 13
Mac OS Sequoia 15.6.1

Recently updated to both of these versions and I notice a couple things:

1. When I add effects to the timeline now, pressing the Return key does nothing. It used to render the effects.
In order to render now I have to go to the Sequence menu and select "Render Entire Work Area".

2.  After rendering, the timeline turns green and the entire video plays as it should, but when I export it jitters and freezes at certain points in the playback.  In some cases this is where transition effects were present but in others it was just straight cuts.  And the transition effects are basic wipes and dissolves.

My main concern is getting the file to export cleanly and play back the way it does in the timeline.  Any insights on this as well as why the previous method of rendering no longer works?

UPDATE:  I was able to export a clean version using ProRes422.  The error is occuring when I try to use H.264 with the Match Source Adaptive High Bitrate setting.

The Return key stopped rendering because Adobe changed shortcuts in Premiere 25.5. Reassign “Render Effects in Work Area” to Return via Keyboard Shortcuts.

Export freezes/jitters happen due to an H.264 hardware encoding bug on macOS Sequoia with Premiere 25.5.
Fixes:

1. Use Software Encoding instead of hardware.

2. Clear media cache and re-render.

3. Export to ProRes 422, then transcode to H.264.

4. Match sequence and export frame rates.

ProRes exports are clean because they bypass the hardware encoder issue.

Hi,

Thanks for the message. I hope I can help you.

Regarding the Return Key Not Rendering Effects:

You're absolutely right that pressing Return used to trigger rendering in the timeline. In Premiere Pro 25.5, there were some changes to keyboard shortcut defaults. It’s possible that the shortcut was removed or reassigned during the update. You can manually reassign it by going to:

Premiere Pro > Keyboard Shortcuts
Search for “Render Effects in Work Area” or “Render Selection”
Then reassign Return/Enter if it’s currently unassigned.

Does that fix the issue?

About your issue you're seeing with H.264 (Match Source Adaptive High Bitrate), it could be related to GPU encoding, bitrate spikes, or how transitions are being processed during export. A few things to try:

Switch to Software Encoding

In the Export Settings dialog, under Encoding Settings, change Performance from Hardware Encoding to Software Encoding. This can help avoid GPU-related glitches.

Try a Different H.264 Preset
Instead of “Match Source Adaptive High Bitrate,” try “High Quality 1080p HD” or manually set a CBR (Constant Bitrate) around 20–30 Mbps.

Clear Media Cache
Go to Premiere Pro > Preferences > Media Cache and clear the cache. Corrupted cache files can sometimes cause export issues.

Check for Plugin Conflicts
If you’re using third-party transitions or effects, try disabling them to see if the issue persists.

Let us know if any of these steps help, or if you’d like to share a sample project file for deeper investigation. We’re here to help!

Best,

Kevin

See screenshots.  The Return key icon shows on the top menu as a shortcut for rendering, and it was already assigned on the Keyboard Shortcuts.  I tried removing and reassigning it, but it still doesn't work for me.  Also, going to the top menu and clicking "Render Effects in Work Area" also does nothing.  "Render Entire Work Area" is the only thing that responds.

I cleared cache and I was able to export H.264 using the High Quality 1080p setting, but still got the freeze on the Match Source.  I tried exporting with Software Encoding and it was actually worse than with the Hardware setting.

The transitions are from the Effects menu, not third party, and they're just basic wipes and dissolves.

Hi,

What if you use in and out points instead of a Work Area? Is the shortcut working then? Can you try pressing Shift at launch and deleting media cache from the reset options dialog box? That will also clear current media cache.

What is the original source footage and which device created the files?

Thanks,
Kevin
