Question

Renderer option greyed out Windows laptop RTX

Hi guys! Hope all is well.

I am working on some video projects and I can't get to use my GPU to render things. This is making my workflow so slow. I have a laptop with an RTX 3060. I am connecting my laptop to a 2nd monitor using an HDMI cable.

I have tried everything: updated my drivers, did a clean installation, and rebooted so many times. This is very frustrating.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Can you post the output of GPUSniffer.exe? You can find this in the directory where Premiere executable exists. I would recommend running it from command line. Otherwise the output will come an and go away really fast

Btw, are you using the beta or the stable release?

Alternatively, Do you have OpenCL and OpenGL Compatibility Pack installed? (Check control panel as this might get installed by Microsoft in the background)
If you do, try removing it and re-launch Premiere.

And as always. ... the GPU is used for some things, not for many others. So when a GPU process is active, the GPU use will spike. When one isn't present, that GPU will idle.

Such things as Warp, other major resizing, many time-changes that required caculating new frames, video noise reduction, color/tonal changes ... those will HEAVILY involve the GPU.

Basic encoding a new video file, not so much. Some GPUs now do have some help for H.264/5 long-GOP encodes, many don't.

And there's two completely different "software only" meanings.

The first ... is in the Project panel on Mercury Acceleration ... if you can't see your GPU. If it does, you will get the CUDA option, and that GPU will be used as Pr normally uses a GPU listed above.

The second ... and very confusing 'software only" phrase ... is in H.264/5 renders, the Summary section of the Export dialog.

This use has nothing to do with your GPU.

For 1-pass H.264/5 encodes, it is only about your CPU having the right chip to do the specialized long-GOP encoding. Not about your GPU at all.

And if it is a 2-pass encode, then ALL encoding is software only as NO 2-pass encodes anywhere are done on a specialized chip.

So ... what's your specific GPU issue?

Hi Neil! Thanks so much for your reply!

I see and I understand. My issue is that I can choose my GPU to render the video files on Premiere Pro. Normally I can do that and the experience is better and faster for sure, relying on the CPU makes things slower and not as smooth.

Normally I am able to use my GPU for that but now the option is greyed out. I updated the drivers, installed different versions with no luck.

Thanks again for your help.

So that is the Project Settings Mercury Acceleration ... which driver do you have installed?

At this time, the only recommendation is the 517.40 STUDIO driver using a "clean install". Nothig later seems stable.

Do a clean installation of the 517.40 Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver)

Newer drivers have known issues in the latest versions of Premiere Pro.

Hello! Thanks so much for your reply! I tried this but no luck. I will try updating from Geforce Experience and rebooting my PC. Hope it works. Thanks again!

Try the Studio Driver for the RTX 3060: NVIDIA Studio Driver | 527.56 | Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11 | NVIDIA

Do a clean installation of the drivers.

O.k, i quote Neil´s question then: "So ... what's your specific GPU issue?"

That question needs to be answered. More details about what the GPU does and/or does not can be found in Neils post below. 🙂
