RIPPLE TRIM SHOULD BE DEFAULT

This is fairly simple; in 26.3.2 (Build 2) Premiere has departed from a classic default behavior of the Select tool when hovering over a cut-- it goes to Side Trim mode!

It should always default to Center Roll, and allow editors to decide whether to extend a cut (Center Roll) or affect synch with a Side Trim.

I find I have to depress the Command key to get Center Roll, and it’s an annoying extra step that shouldn't be there.

This one is worth fixing ASAP!

Might be turning it off instead of you thinking of turning it on: when off there is no snapline

I’m getting old. I meant CENTER ROLL should be default. Completely botched my complaint.

Appreciate you stopping by the Premiere forums and giving us those details about trim modes in v26.3.2.

As Ann mentions, can you let us know about your preferences and perhaps check on your shortcuts as well, and let us know if clearing/returning to default on either resolved your issue?

If not, to better help with troubleshooting, may we get some more details about your setup including:

Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
Mac Chip (Mac Only): Please let us know what M-series chip you have. If Intel please include GPU.
GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
Media Files: video, images, etc. and what types? (Check under Media Properties if needed)
Media Storage: Are your Scratch Disks set to your Documents folder or the same as project, and is this the same as the Media drive?

Additional questions below are helpful for narrowing the issue down:

Does it affect all projects or only some? What about new, empty projects?
Do you recall which Premiere this was last working in, and what might have changed? Any plugins, update to computer or drivers, etc.
When did the problem first begin?

Hi, Katie-

Apologies for lack of detail. I don’t really consider this a bug, but rather an omission or unwanted change, thus I didn't follow bug reporting protocol.

The change occurred after the update to 26.3.2. Previous versions honored the previous default. The change is global.

My MacOS Is Sequoia 15.7.9, also recently updated.

I work on a Mac Studio M1 Ultra with 64 GB RAM.

Media files come in as H264 and are immediately transcoded to standard ProRes, either HD or 4K, served from an 8TB RAID. Exports are usually back to H264 for review/approval.

As for keyboard shortcuts, I developed a shortcut mode I call FCP 8, because Premiere answered most all my expectations for what should have been FCP 8! Due to body memory I wanted many shortcuts to echo my previous FCP (and even early Avid) experience. These are integrated with useful Premiere shortcuts, such as Cycle Trim sides on the U key.

As far as I know, none of these should affect default behavior of the select tool hovering over a cut.

Ann has kindly pointed out a new Trim setting, which I hope cures this issue. Will report back.

Might want to check your Preferences > Trim as its working as expected here on windows.

The Centre Roll is called Roll Edit, Side Trim > Trim in/out (red) or Ripple Trim in/out (yellow)

When trashing preferences the trim tools are reset to the behaviour you are describing.

Oooh, that was nice to see working-- I completely missed the new Trim panel. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Now, why is the Snap tool so lame? That’s equally critical. When I press N (my remapped key command from the Premiere default S) I really can’t see the neat snap pointers which should appear when the cursor arrives at a cut. This is odd-- sometimes they appear and several times they haven’t.

Do I have bad breath?
