Scaled down footage freezing Premiere when zoom applied

My M1 Mac Air can process my footage (4k 30) fine (at 1/4 resolution),  but when attempting to increase the size of the layer (with transform) for a zoom-through mask effect, the increased detail seems to immediately freeze my computer. Any tips on reducing the quality?

Also, rendering (Rotoscoped linked AE files) has reduced my free disk space from 80 to 70GB, is there any way to reclaim space, or do I need to upgrade soon?

Cheers, Matt

@Carlos Ziade has correctly explained that a Proxy workflow is basically the only way you're going to get better performance with the machine you have. In addition to that, export your rotoscoped AE files to ProRes and import into your project, instead of using dynamic links. Linked files take much more computational power to play back.

Realistically, you're going to have to do a lot of compromises like this to edit comfortably on a Macbook Air. If you do choose to upgrade (and are sticking with Mac) I would recommend looking at a Macbook Pro, Mac Studio, or Mac Mini.

Clean media cache, in after effects purge disk cache and memory.

delete render files from sequence.

reset premiere pro preferences.

try to use proxy workflows.

set video previews and codecs from sequence settings to QuickTime rather than H.264
