Question

Scrubbing 4K H264 is lagging compared to DVR

Hi.
I edit on a Macbook Pro M1 Max full specs. Clips are stored on a fast external Tb3 nvme disk.
In Premiere 26, scrubbing through H264 High 422 10bits 4K files is not smooth at all, skips a lot of frames. Put a MOGRT above or speed ramp a clip, and I need to render it if I want to play it in real time.

I did a test on Resolve and it’s smooth as butter, just like I’d expect from my machine.
Is this a Premiere thing, being a little “behind” ? Or is there something I can do to improve the speed of decoding?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers.
Max

As to the difference between the apps ... Resolve and Premiere are coded quite differently, in how they utilized and apply hardware. So in some things, one process performs better on “X” hardware in one than the other. Some things better in Resolve, some better in Premiere.

There will always be those differences.

Give Sumeet the data he requests, like anyone, they do actually try to improve performance all the time.

    Hi Max,

Sorry to hear about this. Are you still experiencing this issue in v26.0.1? Also, does scrubbing performance improve if the media is copied to the MacBook's internal drive?

    Thanks,
    Sumeet

    Hi Sumeet.
I don’t have the source files I was talking about anymore, but I did a scrubbing test with other files:
    - Sony MXF OP1A AVC 4:2:2 10bits: both programs scrub flawlessly.
    - XAVC 4:2:2 10 bits: they both struggle!
    Thank you.
