Question

Scrubbing the timeline ignores all clip-level audio FX

  • Issue - Scrubbing the playhead in the timeline ignores compressors (and other clip-level audio FX)
  • Steps to reproduce
    1. Add any audio to your timeline
    2. Apply a single-band compressor from Effects panel with the following settings:
      • Voice leveler, -13.5db, 12x:1, 0ms, 100ms, 0dB
    3. Play the clip and you will see the audio levels get cut off at the threshold we set in the compressor
    4. Scrub the clip with your playhead and you will see the audio levels peak higher than the threshold, much like the original audio
    5. (optional) Experiment with other clip-level audio FX (I tested Pitch Shifter and Studio Reverb) and you will find that scrubbing ignores those effects as well.
  • Expected result - Playing or scrubbing the clip should have identical effect on the audio levels
  • Actual result Scrubbing the clip ignores the added compressor and other audio clip-level audio FX
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version - 25.1.0 (Build 73)
  • Operating system - Windows 11 version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.4061)
  • GPU driver version (Windows only) - NVIDIA Studio Driver v576.02 (GeForce RTX 3080)
  • Video format - Doesn't matter, it happens to every media you import
  • Comparative information
    • Affects all projects, doesn't matter if I make a brand new project or open a project from 3 years ago when this bug didn't happen
    • Only workaround I've managed to find is to apply the compressor to the entire audio track using Audio Track Mixer panel instead of on clip-level FX
    • I have used Premiere v14.9 extensively and it wasn't an issue there. First time I noticed it, was when I upgraded to v24.3, but it may have also been present from as early as v22.2
    • Here's a screen-recording of the bug in action

I rely on scrubbing through my audios a lot during cutting, and its jarring to have to listen to Premiere suddenly crank up the volume if I try to scrub. Even selecting a different point on the time-ruler to jump around my timeline plays 1-frame of cranked audio and it gets annoying pretty fast.

Hi @Anique. -  When scrubbing through your footage in Premiere Pro, it’s expected behavior that certain effects including audio effects like the Single-Band Compressor may not be processed in real time. This allows for smoother scrubbing performance. The effect will still be fully applied during playback and in your final export.

Hi @jamieclarke!
This didn't used to be the case before in Premiere v14.9, which is what I've used extensively in my career. I usually work with optimized media so there's minimal chance that audio effects would not be processed in real-time.
Is there any way we can toggle between the option to scrub with all audio FX, and without?

@MyerPjHi!
That Global FX Mute button only works for any video effects (such as Lumetri Color), it has no effect on the audio effects (I double-checked this just now).

I didn't check any of that, but just a heads up, there is the Global Effects Mute, either on a button on the program monitor or via the Wrench menu. Most of us have been caught out by that before.
