Severe Premiere Pro 2023 editing in timeline Lag

Hey all,

 

I want to start this entry by mentioning that this is the first post I have ever made on this site, so if I am missing any information, I want to apologize in advance. (All computer stats and settings are listed at the bottom of this post).

 

So recently, I have been running into an issue that has made editing content a lot more tedious and has driven me up a metaphorical wall ever since it happened. This issue started around a month ago, and I have no clue why it happened. I have been using Premiere for about five years on my current desktop to create content for YouTube, and in all that time, I have never encountered an issue like this. This is by far the worst thing I have had to deal with during my time working with Premiere.

 

The issue appears to be performance-based; playback in the timeline and source monitor is 100% fine, but editing in the timeline can be a literal nightmare at times. Basically, when cutting a clip, stretching a clip, compressing a clip, dragging a clip, moving a clip, adding a clip, deleting a clip, pasting a clip, adding a crossfade or resizing it, there is a good chance I will experience a 3-10 second delay. (This delay also happens when undoing actions too). This, as you can tell, makes editing not enjoyable at all, and working on big projects is frustrating with this issue. The weird thing is that the problem seems to occur randomly, or at least I think it does.

 

Some attempted fixes I have tried include deleting unused cache, purchasing more RAM, and resetting preferences. However, none of these worked at fixing the issue. Something I did notice is that when I closed out of the project or sequence file, the issue was gone for some time until it came back. (Around 1-2 mins). I have no clue if this is connected to the problem I am facing.

 

I have a link to a video editing session I did a month ago to demonstrate the issue I am facing. The video is approximately 30 minutes long, but I have timestamped it so you can see where the issues pop up.

(https://youtu.be/pYTd9J-mesg). (Note: for some reason the audio gets messed up partway thought the video, this is something that I didnt hear when editing, and was caused due to an issue with OBS, good thing is you dont need to listen to the audio anaway).

 

Issues presented in video:

- Streching (1:43, 15:40, 24:14, 28:26)

- Compressing (9:30, 10:17, 16:16)

- Cutting (2:56)

- Adding (6:26, 12:16)

- Pasteing (8:23)

 

Something to note is that all of the files I work with are in H.264 format. I recently learned, through researching this issue, that H.264 is something no editor should ever use for editing. However, I've been using this format for five years and haven't encountered any problems with it until now. In the past, I've worked on projects that had six movies imported at the same time, along with a bunch of other video clips, with zero performance problems. So, I don't think this is the cause of the issue I am facing, but I could easily be wrong.

 

So yeah, I really don't know what else to say. This issue has been a huge pain in my rear, and as someone who creates short mini-documentaries, it's been driving me crazy and extending the time it takes for me to get work done.

 

I genuinely hope one of you can provide some insights on what I need to do to fix this because I have no clue where to look or what to do.

    Create a new project, and IMPORT the current project into it, that could possibly help. With a clean install of Windows, you should have as good a system as possible. As to NVIDIA, what optimizations have you taken. I simply do a clean install for each studio driver I update to. And I only install the video driver, and only recently have begun to also include the audio driver. I don't install PhysX or GeForce and I promptly remove the nvidia control panel. So, I don't any tweaks on Nvidia. And even PP - What did you 'optimize'? The amount of ram I suppose, but the default is OK.


    Well I figured out that the issue was some of the Movies being a VFR and not CFR. After encoding them all to ProRez with a CFR the progam is runing smooth again. I have no clue why I didnt experiance this error in the past, I have probably made a 100 vidoes and never ran into this. I want to thank you and Peru Bob for helping me get out of this nightmare!

    Hi guyz,
    I'm facing same problem in premiere 23. I have find a solution.
    Just go to sequence setting and uncheck the auto tone map media option. thats it

      You need to replace the C drive with a large, fast, SSD and then your performance will improve.

      A partitioned drive will cause performance issues as stated in previous replies.

      UPDATE:

      I wanted to clarify that the C drive runs on an SSD and the D-G drives run on an HDD. After clearing up space, here is what all the drives I have look like. Thing is that the problem is still happening though, anyone else know what I can try?

          Hey guys last update for the night,

          So I just wanted to show off that the issue is still going on, and appers to have gotten worse, the same type of edits I do for the video clips can also cause lag when I do them for the Audio clips as well. (All .wav files) Later I am going to do a fresh install of Premire, hopefuly that fixes it, but I belive this is rooted in something deeper. If you guys know what is causing this issue or some support line I can contact please let me know because this problem is driving me up the wall.

          What are the hard drives (how many, what kind, what is on each, what capacity, and how full)?

          Make sure to use the latest Studio Driver from NVIDIA (NOT the Game Driver).

            Hey Peru Bob, thanks for your comment! To answer your question I have partisoned my drives.

            I have a "Windos C:" (For windows stuff and anything on the desktop. I have 24.1gb's free on this drive with 198gigs being used up).

            A "Scratch Dics D:" (This is for anything Premire Pro. I have 24.4gb's free on this drive with 55.5gigs being used up).

            A "Movies E:" (This is where I store the films that I use for my projects. I have 375gb's free on this drive with 218 gigs being used up).

            A "Games F" (This is where I store some games I sometimes play. I have 444gb's free on this drive with 149 gigs being used up).

            A "Sorurce Files G:" (This is where I store my youtube assets. I have 477gb's free on this drive with 117gigs being used up).

             

             

            As for the NVIDIA Driver, I will have to look into that and see if it fixes the issue, I will reply to this saying if it solved the issue or not.

            Is this one drive with all of those partitions?

            It is recommended not to partition drives, as it can result in decreased performance.

             

            Are those drives all fast SSDs or are they HDDs?
