Smart Render / Use Previews bug and fix

On one of my long, effect intensive sequences, I was surprised to discover that smart render actually worked. I left the edit room early!

I had written off "use previews" because of how it would function correctly one time, then after a Premiere update, would seem to break. Sometimes it would work for one export, and then a few days later it wouldn't. Of course, I've been following the workflow that Adobe lays out.

Since I was able to get it working the other day, I've been able to figure out part of the randomness. Here's what happens:

-If I start with a properly setup, completely unrendered sequence using ProRes as the render codec, then I can simply "Render In to Out" and then immediately export the sequence using the preset: "Match sequence preview settings". Smart render works! However, if I do nothing, and just export the sequence again with the exact same settings, the export takes significantly longer this time. Smart render fails! Baffling.

-Solution 1: Select "Delete render files in to out" then re-render the entire sequence. Immediatly export using "Match sequence preview settings" and once again smart render works. But, you have to delete and re-render every time. This is not helpful.

-Solution 2: Take a fully rendered sequence, close it. Then, open another seuqnece, and close that. Then re-open the original fully rendered sequence. Now you can export again using previews. You have to do this every time, but it works! Wow!

Anyway, having sorted this out today, I figured I'd post. As an editor trying to hit deadlines and keep our post department running, this is a necessary feature. Keep in mind, I'm using Premiere 23.4.0 on an Intel iMac, running Team Projects, so your milage may vary.

Hi @Kcaudill,

Thanks for your note. I was able to reproduce the bug in 23.4. Good news, however, it appears to be fixed in 23.5. Can you check it out on your end? Crossing fingers!

Thanks,
Kevin

After a quick test, it appears that 23.5 fixes this bug. I will continue to try this on some more complex sequences to make sure they behave the same way in the next few days, but so far so good!

Hello @Kcaudill,

I read your post, thanks. I'm a little unclear about your problem. You should be able to use smart rendering multiple times without having to re-render. You may want to inspect your Sequence Settings and your settings for rendering previews. Are you using the "Using Previews" button? Let us know. I would hate to see a bug introduced in this workflow.

Thanks,
Kevin

I should be able to use smart rendering multiple times without deleting renders / re-rendering and or closing and re-opening the sequences. Therein lies the problem.

To answer your question @Kevin-Monahan, yes, I am using the "Use Previews" button. It's cheked by default when using the included "Match sequence preview settings" export preset. I have also tried manually creating export settings that exactly match the sequence preview settings, in my case ProRes 422.

Please keep in mind, I have used this workflow regularly in past versions of Premiere as I often edit longer / complex videos that are a bear to export. Recently, it has become unpredictable and unreliable so I had mostly written it off until it just miraculasly worked the other day.

Hello @Kcaudill,

Got it. I will test the workflow when I get a moment. Where are your video preview files located? On an external drive? If so, what kind and how is it connected to your system? I hope we can help troubleshoot this situation.

Thanks,
Kevin
