Smart Rendering with Downscaling

I'm trying to implement smart rendering into my workflow but I'm still unsure about a couple things. The projects I''d be using this for are shot in UHD and placed in a 1080p timeline (I frequently have to reframe/punch in for additional virtual camera angles.) Is there any way to reap any of the benefits of smart rendering in my situation? Assuming the frame rate/codec/bitrate match of course. Or does the fact that downscaling occurs completely destroy any chance of faster renders?

Set your sequence preview to the codec used at frame-size of export, it shouldn't make any difference (I don't think) that some media is scaled. But ... easiest & fastest way to learn, is to try it. Select a section of a sequence with a couple different scalings involved, set in/out, Render selection. Also then select some on either side of that, set in/out, Export that section. Should take what, five minutes?
