Some Audio Files Suddenly Have Neither Sound Nor Waveform

Hoping someone can assist with an issue that has arisen spontaneously within a project.

I have a large documentary production containing several projects. The majority of the media consists of long multi cam interviews set up as mulit-cam source sequences, with 2-3 video tracks each, original dialogue ch3&4, cleaned dialogue (Adobe Enhance, carried out using the online tool, not the Prem-native tool) on ch1&2.

This is a near 12-month old project. Everything has been fine with it until today. When I opened the project, the dialogue was missing from many of the interview clips. On investigation, it turns out that most, but not all, of the audio files returned from Adobe Enhance no longer contain audio when played back within Premiere, and the waveforms are not visible.

  • The files are still on the hard drive.
  • The files play back fine through other applications.
  • No other audio files seem to be affected. Foley, music, original interview audio are all fine.
  • Making them offline, and then relinking doesn't help.
  • Importing them again does not help.
  • Deleting media cache does not help.

Weirder still, I opened a backup of the project (whole project, including all media, on a separate drive) that also was previously fine, and that is now suffering the same issue.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Two things:

  1. Make sure the clips are not disabled.  Right click on one of the problematic files and make sure there is a check next to “Enabled”.
  2. Or, right click on the file, and select Remove Attributes, the place a check next to only the Audio Attributes, then press OK.  This will remove any volume and pan info, resetting the source clip.

Please let us know if this helps or not.

Hello Matt,

Thanks for your kind reply. I'm afraid your suggestions did not help. I am quite confident that this issue is a bug, and not about settings.

Interestingly, I've found that if I open the project containing the interviews (I'm working within a Production, and assets and sequences are split into different projects), and leave it for 10 minutes, it seems to find the audio again. It's weird that it's this one type of audio that's affected only. All audio attached to video is fine. Foley and music files remain unaffected. The only thing that separates these audio files is that they were created by the Adobe Enhance online tool. And they've been working fine for months. Very odd.

Something is definitely messed up in the production, however, because my sequences project contains multiple, automatically created "Recovered Clips" folders, which contain duplicates of my interviews. My interviews are complex in that they're multicam, but also green screen. Each camera's footage is nested so that I can composite the source clip, rather than my within working sequences. I suspect nesting within multicam sequences is creating problems.
