Question

Source Monitor Crop (solved, but looking for alternate workarounds)

Many of us shoot 16:9 footage and edit 2.35:1 films, but when we enter the Source Monitor, everything's displayed as 16:9. You can activate a ~25% vertical Safe Area in the Source Monitor, but... what if I want that excess out of sight completely?

I couldn't find an official solution or even a workaround on Google. I was coming here to ask, but then an idea popped in my head.

1. Activate a Safe Area overlay (it'll serve as a reference at the start and as added insurance over time).

2. Set the Source Monitor magnification to something other than "Fit." Whatever closely matches the size of your typical Source Monitor panel.

3. Scroll/resize the Source Monitor until you've cropped the video to the Safe Area borders.

Voila, "cropped" source monitor!

Note: If you add a marker to the clip, it will increase the Time Rule height under the video, eating into the bottom of your frame a small amount. If it's enough to cause concern, you could always re-adjust the panel size or disable "Show Markers."

I'm also curious to hear other editors' solutions.

I just don't worry about it in the Source Monitor.  Like you, I edit in a cropped sequence, so as long as the Program Monitor looks correct, I'm good.

So what do you do with your pseudo anamorphic sequence when you export?

I make the sequence 1920x816 or 3840x1632 right off the bat, then export the same.
