Source Monitor Navigation Question

I use the Source Monitor to perform In/Out Point edits. I like to use keyboard shortcuts to perform the edits and place the segment onto the Timeline.

 

The problem I encounter in using the shortcuts is that I haven't quite figured out how to use one simple keyboard shortcut to access the monitor's Timecode field in order to type in the timecode wanted after I've set and placed an initial in/out point onto the Timeline.

 

I know I can use the Tab key to access the Timecode field. But I need to press the Tab key multiple times. When I use Final Cut X to perform the same type of edits in its Viewer, all I need to do is use the Control-P keys to access its Timecode field.

 

I've tried to create a costum keyboard shortcut to perform the procedure, but to no avail. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Try this:

Go to Preferences > Timeline and check the box for Set focus on the Timeline when perfrorming Insert/Overwrite edits:

Now with the source monitor active, set and in and an out, use the "." key to drop the marked area to the timeline.

At that point the timeline will become selected.

Type Shift +2 to return focus to the Source Monitor, type Tab and you should be good to enter the next time code number.

Not sure I understand what you are doing. On my system, with the Source Monitor active, if I type "i" to set an in, then press the Tab key, the timecode entry window is highlighted and ready to take input from my numeric keypad.

This is not happening on your system?

Here's my procedure:

1. I have a log of the timecode In/Out points of shots/segments I want to edit in the Source Monitor.

2. Using the log, I type in the In point timecode in the Timecode field and set it using the I key.

3. I then type in the Out point timecode using the Timecode field again (because at this point you navigate into the Timecode field simply by typing the timecode numbers) and set it using the O key.

4. I then press the period key to bring the segment down to the Timeline.

5. At this point the Source Monitor is still engaged and I want to set another In point for another timecode I have on my log, and so I want to navigate back into the Timecode field. But the problem is I can't get into the field by simply typing in the timecode numbers. I either have to do a mouse click to get inside the field or press the Tab key a couple of times. Either way slows the process.

 

As previously mentioned, I'm able to perform this type of keyboard shortcut editing easily in Final Cut X using the Control - P key to get re-established inside the Timecode field of its source monitor (Viewer).
