sourceclip naming for Premiere Pro project

hi there,

i just started a new documentary film project and i´m pretty new to premiere pro - as i am on this forum as well.

for a long feature documentary i just started to go trough the material. and i realized: a lot of xdcam files and also footage from other cameras have the exact same source-clipnames. as we prefer not to transcode the whole material (there´s quite a lot of footage) i´m a bit concerned about the final export to davinci at the end: does anybody have experienced this kind of problem? if so: is there a possiblity to rename the source clips without loosing any (meta)data especially in the xdcam-file-structure? do we need to transcode everthing? if so: what codec would you suggest? we are working on a windows 10 computer with a thunderbolt-raid on premiere pro cc 2017.

if anyone has any thoughts, reccomendations or ideas, you would help me out a lot!
