Question

Spilt/Merge function in Program window

Why can I use the Spilt/Merge function in recent Premiere Pro projects with the Program monitor, but I can’t with older projects and have to use the Source monitor? I’ve read in multiple places that the text is dynamically generated from timeline edits and the split/merge tools will be unavailable. But this doesn’t explain why this isn’t the case with my most recent projects that have timeline edits.

    @mhollopeter,

    The behavior changed as long ago as PR 23.x - when in Sequence view in the transcript panel, the merge/split buttons no longer appeared, but only when in Source monitor view. The view is determined by whether you have the “Follow active monitor” selected, whether a source clip is in the Source monitor, or if “Follow active” is not checked, what you select there.

    But your first screenshot shows that the transcript is in Program Monitor view, and the merge/split buttons are there. What version of PR are you running?

    I have assume that the version PR a project was saved in makes no difference, nor should whether there is an edit that is spanned by a selection. But your screenshot is odd!

    I’m running Premiere Pro 26. It all is very odd. Now I’m opening other project files, and it’s inconsistent.

    My main issue is I wish I could merge segments within the transcript to keep thoughts or topics together instead of breaking in the middle of a sentence. It makes things clearer when I print the transcript for others. Maybe I’m being too anal-retentive. 😅

    @mhollopeter,

    Are you referring to split/merge of transcript or caption text? Or something else?

    I’m referring to transcript text.

    Screenshots might help. How are you merge/splitting transcript text in the Program Monitor?

    The regular merge/split  functions were in the Text panel (transcript or caption tabs depending) and in the Timeline.

    Try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

    That’s a really good suggestion, but it didn’t work. I guess I’m resigned to this inconsistency. 😐

    The first image is from a recent interview. The Program monitor is open, and merge/split is available in the Transcript window even though it crosses an edit in the sequence.

    The second image is from an older interview. The Program monitor is open, but merge/split is not available in the Transcript window. The example crosses an edit in the sequence.

    The third image is from the same interview. The Source monitor is open but now merge/split is available in the Transcript window. However, because the sequence crosses an edit, I can only select text up to that edit. I’d prefer to cross that edit as I could in the first image.

    I don’t understand what has changed between the newer project file and the older one.
