splitting an audio track between voice and background music

I have a client supplied video file that contains visuals, with a voice-over AND background music.

The voice-over and the music are both at the same level, making it difficult to hear the words.

I’ve seared for multiple tutorials on how to decrease the background music, but none have been successful.

Is it possible to split the single audio track into two, one for the voice-over and one for the music? Tried to do so in Premiere and Audition without success.

Ideas?
