Static Mask on a Moving Object

Is there a way to mask part of a moving object with a static mask?  I have an object on the right hand side of the screen. I want text to move into place from the right, as though it was coming from behind the object. I did achieve it by key framing the mask path back into place, but I'm sure there is a quicker way.

Is the can a separate clip from the blue BG, or is the can and background one element?

If it is separate, Blue BG on V1, Text on V2, can on V3. Do the move of the text on V2 and when you are happy with the move, Nest that clip and apply a Crop filter to the nest (since the can edge is a straight line) or draw a mask for the Nest (you may need to invert the mask).

Hard to understand what you want to do. The mask is static (does not move) or the mask tracks the motion of the object? Can you post some screen shots, please.

No, as I wrote in the title, the mask needs to be static. As you see on the screenshots, the mask needs to stay in place in front of the can. The text is moving from right to left. Easily done with AE, but difficult with Premiere since the mask is following the text.

Animate the text, nest the clip and add the mask to the nest (or use a linear wipe on the nest?)
