Question

stereo audio track to multiple tracks for surround sound

I have a movie we made. It was rendered with the audio in stereo. I need to be able to  take that MP4 and split the track so I can create surround sound. I've been watching multiple how to videos, and they've been great with helping me to understand how to set things up in Premiere Pro CC to have multiple tracks, but I haven't found anything that shows me how to separate the one rendered audio track I have into the individual tracks I need. Is there any advice out there on how to split my audio track for surround sound?

Thanks,

Schledia

I haven't done it myself, but I have worked with an audio studio on a project and they were able to take material recorded in a studio where there were some noises of things being dropped during a music performance and completely eliminate those noises.  It was pretty amazing.  I think they were using plug-ins from Izotope.  Do some googling...  Nowadays if you've got the money, almost anything is possible.

Well, what you've just described is noise removal and that is pretty common (though still difficult). That is far cry from separating dialogue, sound effects and music from each other after they've been mixed together.

there are actually some pretty amazing audio plug-ins out there that will allow you to remove and isolate elements however they are not cheap and they require a great deal of skill to implement them.

Are there really plugins for this now? Do you have links? I have my doubts that any plugin could perfectly separate audio elements from each other. You can remove vocals from a song for example, though there's usually lost information.  Sound effects and background ambiance are a lot trickier and I can't imagine trying to remove them  from an entire film.

Regardless, there's no point in using any plugins if you have the source material to go back to.

There is NO way to separate mixed, stereo audio AFTER the fact. There's no easy or thorough method to isolate elements from each other; dialogue, music, sound effects – it's all mixed together. It's like whipping up pancake batter and then going back to try and remove just the eggs!

You need to go back to the final proejct of the film before you exported it, and then export STEMS – all the dialogue together by itself, sound effects together, music, etc. Have separate stem otuputs for the different elements and then you can use those to start mixing 5.1.
