Strange grey mask

Hey guys!

I wanted to try using a mask in a video. I watched a bunch of tutorials on how to do it. But when I started doing it myself, the area around the mask or inside is just gray, although I just needed to make a slight darkening around the edges to highlight the object. Can you please tell me how to turn this off?
