Subtitle position doesn't update for all subs on track

I create subtitles and save the preset as a style. Other properties apply to all subtitles on the track when I click ‘redefine style’. But when I move the position of the subtitles with the controls under ‘align and transform’, the position doesn’t apply to any other subtitles on the track, so I am having to manually move each subtitle which takes a very long time! I can’t find another way to apply the position to all subtitles at once. Please help and save me hours! Thank you.

    Hi @PDMarsay,

Thanks so much for reaching out.  What you’re running into is expected behavior in Premiere. The reason the position isn’t updating when you use Align and Transform is that those controls are clip-level overrides, not style attributes. When you click Redefine Style, Premiere updates properties that belong to the style itself, such as font, size, color, and background, but Align and Transform position are treated as a per-caption adjustment, so they won’t propagate to the rest of the track.

To update position across all subtitles at once, try this instead:

Method 1 – Use Essential Graphics positioning

    1. Select one subtitle.

    2. In Essential Graphics, adjust the Position under the text layer controls, not Align and Transform.

    3. Click Redefine Style.

    4. Select all subtitles on the track and reapply that style if needed.

That position data is style-based and should update across the track.

Method 2 – Bulk copy and paste attributes

    1. Adjust one subtitle to the correct position.

    2. Right-click and choose Copy.

    3. Select the remaining subtitles on the track.

    4. Right-click and choose Paste Attributes and select the relevant text properties.

If it is still not behaving as expected, let me know and we can dig deeper. Sorry for the frustration, I hope we can help soon.

Hi Rach, I appreciate the quick reply.

I’m afraid I’m still having trouble:

For method 1, has essential graphics been renamed? I can’t see it. Under ‘Effect Controls’ nothing shows when I select an individual subtitle.

For method 2, when I right click a subtitle on the subtitles track I’m not getting a drop down menu at all - nothing happens.

    Thanks in advance,

    Peter

Update - I’ve just had a reply to the same question which I asked in a Facebook group for editors and someone pointed out I can simply select all the subtitles on the track, then adjust the position and it moves them all at the same time! That solves it for me, but doesn’t seem very intuitive, I would never have thought of it.
