Suddenly Rounded crop doing weird things

Question

I don’t use Rounded Crop in Pr 26.2.2 a lot but today I need it and I cannot make heads or tails with it.

When I just use on parameter to crop a side it works as it should. But when I try to animate it weird things happen:

You can see that when animated instead of cropping the color from top to bottom it does in in the center. It’s a blank new project with just color mattes, nothing else. Is it a bug or is it so by design? Because if so it should be fixed, it’s nonsense.

Why am I constantly finding bugs in Premiere just a moment before I need to use certain tools in serious projects that are coming?!

Rounded Crop isn't like a standard crop effect. It's designed to create a four-sided crop "window" around an area of the frame, then let you animate that crop's size and position.

You'll notice that adjusting the Bottom setting also adjusts the Offset. The Offset controls the position of the crop window relative to the clip. When you set Bottom to 100%, it sets the Offset to -540 (the top of the clip). However, when you add the next keyframe, the Offset resets to 0 (the middle of the clip), which is what's causing the crop to originate from the center.

For a wipe effect like the one in your video, it would be much easier to use the built-in Crop effect. If you want to stick with Rounded Crop, try animating only the Offset value instead.

Dropping a note here to echo what AndrewTheGreat said and give feedback that you apparently need to hear: The way this feature is implemented is incredibly misguided and I have trouble understanding how the devs landed with this approach.

You say that we should note that animating one side of a crop also changes its offset. But there’s an Offset parameter available to keyframe, and I haven’t touched it. The value is staying the same, but apparently what that value means is changing under the hood?

The best way I can demonstrate that the current behavior is bad: If I can be working in a composition and change the keyframe value of one side of the crop to where I think it should be, and it looks right, it should not suddenly change what that looks like during playback. And yet, that’s exactly what happens, because the offset doesn’t actually change until after the fact. And beyond that, you risk past keyframes being retroactively broken.

If you’re giving me controls for position, offset, and cropping parameters based on the percentage of the full frame, at least give me the option to actually treat the footage with that in mind so that I can keyframe the crop values and not have what’s being shown constantly warping and having to change the offset, which more or less guarantees the source footage not being static?
