Sync files workflow

I have replaced in camera audio with audio from an external recorder using syncronize.  1 audio file, 5 or so video clips.  Done in the timeline.  Worked great.  When I've done this in the past, I usually export the whole thing, then re-import and edit (I don't want to edit this in the timeline).  Is there a better way to do this, without files unsyncing etc.?  I need it out of the timeline and back in the bin so I use my normal 3 point editing system.  Thanks!!!
